Smart Key Intermittent Problem

Working intermittently. Using either of the two remotes, when right next to outside of car, will not allow unlocking either from the remote or by pushing the button on the door. Have to use the metal key to unlock the outside door, then the system works normally. However, the next time I use the car, the same problem? Car is a 2010 CX9 GT, exactly two years old. Any advice? Thanks in advance.

Stupid question first: have you changed battery?
Since both remotes show the problem, it is probably not the remote.
The rear sensor (below the rear bumper) has highest rate of failure among all sensors since it
is exposed to weather elements. (others are hidden inside doors or console)
When one sensor is on the verge of failure, you might experience intermittent problems.
Have the dealer use their computer to locate the issue.

Second stupid question: don't put remote together with your cell phone (such as in the same pocket).

Thanks for the responses, guys. Yes it is still under warranty and I will change the batteries. Seems odd they would both go at the same exact moment but they both have the original batteries so it is possible they are dying at the same time.

If you don't use it, the button battery can last 5 years or more.
The leakage is very slow.
Unless you have both placed very close to the vehicle (within a few feet)...

Both of our keyless entry fobs stopped working. Replaced batteries and they worked for a while then stopped again. Dealer service tech said to push harder on the buttons, but that does not work for us. Car is an '07 CX9. Seems like they should last longer than 5 years...

They are not the best made things in the world. I hardly ever actually press any buttons on our keycards. Usually just stays in my pocket and I use the buttons on the doors and liftgate. I can see a keycard becoming non-functional after 5 years of hard use.

Anyone know if you can replace the Keycard with the regular KeyFob ? I'm down with two dead keycards and only one good aux key to open and start .... hate to spend $250 per new key card and $150 to program at dealer ...

Dubdog, you need to find a way to get at least one of your cards working and buy & have dealer program another or another couple. As it stands now, if you cannot get any card to work, you have to replace your computer to program new cards. But if you have an auxiliary key, not sure if computer needs replacement or not. New style fobs do not work with our special CX9s due to different FCC id's . Buy. 2 cards on ebay and find some way to get one of your old cards working at least for a day.

helbigtw : thanks - how can I find out what my FCC id's are ?

Its engraved into the plastic on your keycard I can't remember where...either on the back or in the battery area. The cardkeys all have the same fcc id's and the newer style fobs all have their own same fcc id's. Basically a conversion likely would entail replacing the engine computer, modules, and possibly the advanced keyless sensors as well. No one on here has ever tried it.
