SLR Camera Advice For First time buyer

No worries mate. The D40 is a 6.1MP camera. I'd like higher than my current 8. ;)

MP is not a valid measure of a cameras ability to take good pictures. In fact, for a given sensor size it is a physic certainty that more pixels will have more digital noise. Cameras with APS-C sensors and >6MP need to use noise reduction in the camera which means you are loosing image data. i.e. you pay for 10MP then the camera blurs, blends and tweaks the image back down to 5 or 6 with noise reduction.

You can avoid this by shooting RAW, but then you get all the noise...

Altspace, if you're looking for a good camera don't fall into the marketing trap of mega-pixels. Get a used 5D which is full-frame so it experiences much less noise.

so whats the difference between the XSi and XTi, for black friday best buy is having the XSi for 699 w/lens

The xsi is a new version of the xti pretty much. But the xsi is a 12mp, with a bigger screen, and a hi-iso noise reduction.

here is pic taken with the 6mp d40. just for a reference.

So thoughts on what im looking at? this one

For the price that looks like a good deal. The 75-300 is a ok lense. The aperture of the lense could be a little better, like 2.8, but again for the price its a good deal. I dont think you will be dissapointed if you go this rout.

do not buy the kit with the 75-300 that lens is crap, if you want to have a cheap telephoto get this its much better https://www.amazon.com (commissions earned)

the xs is a decent camera, so is the xt, xti, xsi, but after you use a 20D or up you wont want to use them again the layout is so much nicer

I have had the xt, 20D, 30D, 40D (still have it), 5D and now I am waiting on the 5D MKII

go for a used 20D / 30D

DAMN IT!! I was SO set on buying it. I am looking for something inexpensive and entry level isn't the 20D and 30D midrange? The best price I found new was nearly the same price for just the body. EOS 30D Is the XS really that bad? I know I can always in the future sell both lenses and put in some for that Sigma right.

Yeah I remember but still i'm not looking to shell out that much. I think im set on getting the XS kit and calling it a day. I can look into maybe selling both lenses or just the zoom in the future and upgrading later. Honestly think it will meet my needs...average needs.

ok so ya im a photographer i have a couple of cameras now... i personally love the d40 its an awesome beginner camera it was my first dslr and i wouldnt trade it for anything... i also have a d300 and have a d3 on order from nikon... i work for bestbuy so i get awesome discounts... but ya 6mp on a dslr is way different than 6mp on a point an shoot, no mirrors in the dslr before the light gets to the sensor... sp pretty much i say that the d40 is awesome or if you font want that then get the d60 with 10mp and the 18-55 DX VR lens... and also with the d40 not having the autofocus built into the body is fine as long as you buy the digital lens and not the film lenses because film lenses will all fit as long as they are after they changed the F-ring(1959) which is pretty much all the lenses out there... and in my personal opinion and much of everyone i work with is that Nikons are better than Cannons because their lenses have a much better quality

avarela, u PM'd me but left the link out to what u were trying to show me haha
