I notice at the bottom of the Cup Holder. The ones in the front seat, has a slot at the bottom of it. I reach in but couldn't feel anything, other than that its angle slightly upward. What is that slot for? Was it suppose to cool my drinks? (cheers)

Not sure what you're referring to. Maybe it's the seam between the fixed portion of the cupholder and the portion that retracts with the cover when it is closed.

Nope. Definitely not a seam. Its in rectangular shape, slightly above the bottom. So hard to describe it. I'll try to take a picture, if I can find my crappy camera.

Not quite sure what you are referring to but, the wife's CX-7 center console has a small slot on the side near the bottom. This is meant to hold a change/accessorie holder that can fit into the space in two directions. The slot is used to contain the bottom edge of the holder and keep it from banging around inside the center console......

new guy here, but thought I could add some interesting perspective.

Couple weeks ago my wife left the smartkey on top of the console behind the front cup holders. The cover for the cup holders was open. She bumped the key and it fell into the slot created by the back of the cup holder cover and the front side of the console. When she tried to slightly close the cup holder cover to remove the key, it slipped through the opening at the bottom and disappeared into the console enclosure. There was no way to get to the key without taking apart the whole structure. This is somewhat freaky since the car won't lock as it senses a key inside the car (there may be a work around but I was in no mood to try and figure this out)

Long story short - I drove to the dealer. Thankfully there was a slot at the bottom of the cup holder as I was able to feel the key through the slot. It must have moved as I was driving to the dealer. They fished the key out. I never saw what they did but judging from the scrapes at the bottom of the cup holder and on the cover, I assume they jammed a screwdriver into the slot to push the key further back and then fished it out with a wire. Not that I am complaining - it beats having them dissemble the whole thing. And they never charged me either, which I am even more happy about.

So be careful where you leave those keys.

To me, the whole point of "SmartKey" is not to take it out of pockets or purses.
Therefore, less chances to lose it or misplace it.

you can still lock the car with another key, but it will beeps about 6 times to indicate that there's key inside.
My wife keeps her key in purse. Sometime, she left her purse inside the car and we walk out. I still can lock the car but with some beeps.

I only have SmartKey and Remote Start Key together.
In home, it is in key holder and in car it is in my pants pocket.
Whenever I want to start the car, I can grab the starter key from outside the pocket to push the button.

I think this slot is for overspill, when your drink spills this slot will take it. I did notice the slot and a dime or penny can actually slide in there. very weird, i have a 2010

I agree...the slot makes no sense. I have almost lost change in it and was worried the loose coins would rattle in there. Maybe a strip of black tape over it is the answer.

I'd love to hear from someone who opened this up and found the answer to the mystery slot! Personally it makes me crazy because I eat a lot of those individually wrapped lifesavers...I've seen a few wrappers slip in the slot, for every one I've seen I'm guessing there's five others! I haven't reached the breaking point where I feel the need to investigate yet...

Earlier in the thread this was almost figured out.

My wife left some coins on top of the closed drink holder. I didn't notice them and opened the drink holder, and the coins disappeared. I figured Mazda was crazy for such a design that ate coins, until I looked into the drink holder and noticed that the coins slid out the slot at the bottom of the drink holder.

So the slot is designed to let coins, or other small objects, slide behind the compartment where the lid is kept when opening the drink holder, and exit the bottom.

Judging from some peoples experience, there are some object that can still fit into this area, and now out the slot, I guess those objects will still get stuck.

My iphone slipped into that slot behind the cup holder. After many unsuccessful efforts, I managed to retrieve it quite easily with a flexible kitchen spatula that I introduced in the slot behind the cup holder cover. With my little finger, I was able to push the iphone from the bottom of the cup holder against the spatula and retrieve it quite easily.

I have the same dumb slot, and I've lost money, coffee stirs, trash, gas tickets, all sorts of stuff - maybe that's where that bar of gold bullion went - in four and a half years I have never figured it out.
