slight burning smell?

uhm, so yeah, i smell this slight burning smell under the hood of my msp. it doesnt smell like overheating or coolant, but it smells different. my friend said it smells like burning rubber. i think it might be the oils and greases that are like on all the parts (engine, heatshield). maybe? is this semi normal? or is it my clutch cuz i just started learning like 2 days ago?

I have noticed 3 or 4 distinct smells from the engine, I know the one you mean and I think it is the rubber hoses from the radiator getting too hot. I am hoping Mazda offers free replacements, certianly the more of us that complain the better. I am still concerned about my coolant smell, which has subsided but can still be smelled. I am not losing coolant, and one can not se any coolant anymore but can trace amounts still leak or spray from those hoses?

should of been in my garage the night i brought mine home after an hour long drive and undercoating 6 or so hours before. DAMN did that place stink.

but yes, new engines have all that greasy protective coating crap over it so it'll smell like that for awhile till it all burns off. you could try a mild cleaner on it or engine specific cleaner. might put you at ease a little more.

can everyone who has these leakage/smells problems or who has had to go back to the dealer for any problem (other than clunks) post detailed descriptions of where to check for their specific leak? pictures of the specific hose/tube etc would be GREATLY appreciated. Im picking mine up tomorrow and it would be awesome if i knew right where to look for these things instead of having to wait till i get home and smell something funny....

thx

slug,
like i said, i dont think i have any leaks, i dont notice anything, and i have also been checking my coolant level. it is fine. no oil leaks by turbo or anything like that. i pretty much figured it just the oils and misc coatings on everything under the hood and such.

but im going to stop by the dealership tommorow and ask them to check the alignment. something doesnt feel like 100%. its seems like the car likes to pull to the right.

Look below the lower radiator hose (lower left). At the correct angle you can view a splash guard, thjis is where the dealer cleaned coolant off. With no leaks we think it was spilled at the port.

i was told that the burning smell comes from within the tubro, theres a layer of sumthing inside there that burns off within the firts couple of hundred of miles. im at 1300 miles now and its completely gone, hang in there.

hey dexter, does your car pull to the right all the time or just under acceleration?

its highly noticable under acceleration. but lets say im making a turn, at a constant speed, the car will seem to get "locked" in moving right. i dunno, its wierd to explain i guess, but i just wanna make sure the alignment isnt fux0red before i get tires and s***

After i got my winter tires, i find that my car pulls to the LEFT. The steering wheel keeps pulling to the left as i cruise down the highway. I think it could be just the tire pressure though...i gotta check on it.

dexter, have u ever drove a car with 17s before? They can do that sometimes to a certain extent.....get into a "groove" where they decide they are gonna follow that contour in the pavement over that way for a few feet and you have to pull to get it goin straight, could also be alignment, i thought i remembered hearing somewhere in some review that keeping this car aligned was gonna be a pain.

nope, ive never driven a car with 17's before. i took it to the dealer today and they said that was normal + torque steer. cuz it doesnt really go just ONE way, it like pulls whatever way it wants to go / get "locked" into. lol

all is well. just must get blizzaks before it snows here again

I discovered a small leak after a couple days of owning my MSP.
On the top of the turbo there is a hard oil line .
That line would leak a very small amount of oil when driving.
Just enough to keep me wondering where that smell was coming from. I took it back to the dealer and they said the flair fitting was not tightend completly.
Fitting now tight and no more leaks yet.

my friend noticed small droplets of oil under my car. i am going in tomorrow to check it out. bleh, i'm pretty sure that the burning smell was oil or something and i've had that from the very beginning. i think my car has been leaking too from the beginning because i noticed fresh droplets of oil in my garage where only my car parks. sigh...
