side mount intercooler

Hello everyone- My girlfriend has a 2g eclipse with a side mount intercooler. I have seen them for sale on ebay for as cheap as $35. Most people don't seem to be changing them out until around the 250+ hp level. Is there any inherent design problem with making one work on a MSP? Thanks in advance-CC
 
all intercoolers function the same.
run piping to it between the turbo and the throttle body, and it cools the air.

the stock msp i/c is good for 250.

Heat soak = power loss. Also adding a better intercooler will increase performance, simply due to the fact that the air going into the TB will be cooler...

What i was getting at here was that the DSM intercooler is no better than the MSP intercooler. If you want a different one, then buy a FMIC, either from wagner, ion, or someone else, or order the stock replacement from www.jspec.com.

You could also buy a core, buy some bends, and couples and make it yourself....

if you are planning on replacing the intercooler your best bet would be to just get a front mount...

i had a sidemount on my 01 tdi golf and it got heatsoaked fast...
if you change things you may as well go with the best... so you dont have to do it twice..
 
I would say a side mount would be the most efficient and money saving. FMIC are usually rated for 400+ or 500+ hp or some high number. The problem is that our side mount are designed for a diesel protege...so not really effective...look at how thin it is. If you get a real side mount innercooler it will be better then getting a FMIC mainly because of the pipes and you wont get pessure drop becasue its pretty hard to rout piping to a FMIC. I would say Ion FMIC kit does a pretty good job...but requires cuting. if you upgrade your turbo thats another story. If you plan to run stock boost dont really see a reason to be getting a FMIC ...it looks beautiful and cool. Also there has been talk of overheating problems. If you are gonna get FMIc I would get a P5 radiator...again its just from what some members say....no hard facts

I dont really know how a DSM innercooler looks like and how it would fit in our car. But I would look around. I know curicuit sport has one SMIC. And I think Forge Motorspot is also thinking about developing one.

The 2g intercooler is worst than ours. Most 2g guys end up buying a TT supra sidemount and convert it into a FMIC.

The benefit of a sidemount is quicker spool up and less boost pressure loss throughout the piping.
 
EDIT: Looks like Kelvin posted while I was typing, so most of this is just a repeat.

Time for me to clear up some of the misinformation in this thread...

1. The stock side mount blows because it was taken directly from a turbo-diesel Protege in Europe & wasn't intended to be used on the MSP.

2. You DO NOT necessarily need a FMIC because there ARE SMICs that work very well, such as the Forge SMIC for the GTI 1.8T: http://www.forgemotorsport.com/tun.asp?cat=tun&product=FMINTMKS. FMICs are designed for more power than 95% of the people on here are ever going to have & they aren't cheap either. Hopefully Forge will be able to make a SMIC for the MSP soon.
