Should I send this sub back?

I got the Rockford fosgate 8" to replace my stock sub. It just arrived in the mail today. I opened up the package to find that the cone is cracked. The crack is not very large and I don't care what it looks like, but I'm wondering if it could spread and affect how it plays. It's kinda a pain to send it back and wait for another. I bought this off of cardomain.

Only the longest crack acutally reaches the surface, I can't feel the other cracks with my fingernail. They cracked from underneath somehow? Could this be from heat?

LOL

yeah.. send it back in man, you don't want to get stuck with a messed up sub. Normally.. you could repair door speakers when they get ripped there, but I don't know about a sub. I wouldn't take the chance if I were you.

why did you go RF over a JL 8w0?

Huh? W0's suck! He didn't say what kind of rockford, but they make some pretty nice subs, and if it's anywhere above the middle range of their subs, it will definatly kick a w0's ass. For the MSP enclosure, I'd go with a JL 8w3v2, but maybe that's just me.

ps, either send it back and wait or find a Rockford rebuilder in your area and pay to have the cone replaced, but it will eventually fail due to stress and you'll have to deal with it then, so I say get it fixed before it's a problem. Preventative maintenence.

an 8w3v2 would have been much nicer, but probably more expensive.

on a side note, i cant wait to put my 12w3v2 in my car.

OK, I guess I'll be sending it back then.

I couldn't justify the price of a 8w3v2, this one is a RF Punch stage 2 P28S4. I've heard good things about it, and it only costs $80.

Plus it's a pain in the ass to buy a JL since they don't sell them online. I almost got one from some local audio store last weekend, but the decided to close an hour earlier than their posted hours. (monkey)

JL doesn;t sell online becuase like rockford, they do not warrety there products that way. Buy a rockford or JL online, and you get nada for a warrenty.

Not to mention, you are in austin, there are a ton of JL dealers around you.

$80 for the W0
$140 for the W3

Roughly, I can't recall exactly.

How do you install the replacement sub in our cars?

Is it too hard or just plug and play.

Thanks

Have beer, take of the grill, remove the screws, lower the sub, unhook it, hook up the new sub, raise it up, screw it it, put back on the grill if it will fit, have beer (rockon)

Is there any difference in performance?

Thanks for the help guys,

Fede

Looks like that is the JL sub most people get. That one you linked to is dual 2 ohm i believe, so you can run the coils in series to get 4ohm. Stock sub is 8ohm, but the amp is designed to handle 4ohms so it will be okay. Some people recommend relocating the amp to make it not inverted anymore, so it dissipates heat better. But I've also seen testimony of others with upgraded subs saying the stock lcation is fine. As long as the gain isn't too high I think it will be gravy.
Going from 8ohm to 4ohm, and a better quality speaker should be a significant difference in performance.

I looked in the JL website and It did not mention an 8 ohm option for that sub.

Is that correct?
