shift stick moves...

i have a 2002 protege 5 with the 5 speed standard with 80,000 miles..... i notice that the gear stick moves on its own , but not out of gear when i step on the gas... it does this on every gear..... the car seems to work good and shifts nicely..... is this normal for a p5?......... i've driven many standards and i've never seen a gear stick that moves when stepping on the gas. please respond asap.

as in you feel it move when you hit the gas?

Sounds like your motor mounts are wearing out.

yes, i think its completly normal since the shifter is connected to the transmission(but you already know that). Mine does that too.

Btu maybe im wrong and the mounts are shot...

My 93 MX6 does that too, i'm pretty sure its just because like he said, its conncected to the tranny, and if you're talking about it moving towards you with every punch of the gas... then yeah it could be your bushings being too worn in, and not supporting it well enough. I am going to purchase some custom made polyethylene bushing for the shifter side, and the transmission side for $45 shipped... check out this thread and get ahold of the guy because he can make some for any car - especially your's since it's Mazda. There are videos as well showing the difference it makes in your shifter slop, but like I said i'm not for sure if it will solve your problem, but it couldn't hurt to try.

Mine does this too. When stepping on the gas and letting off, it moves forwards/backwards accordingly.

I'm not sure if the 03's do it though.

The shifters are directly connected to the transmission via rod linkages, so yes it's normal for the shifter to move as you change the load on the engine. If it's really noticable movement though, you really should check your motor mounts, as it's a sign that your motor is flopping around quite a bit.

nah my motor mounts are brand new, brand new short shifter with poly bushings, and mine moves about 1cm when i hit the gas. if yours is the same then your good. my motor mounts were completely shot when i first got the car replaced all four with OEM

mine is an '03 pro5 manual and it does this. i actually drove around for a while to figure out what was goin on. lol the lighter u press the gas the less it moves down lol.
and in second gear, if u pass 2k rpm it will kick the shifter back farther into the gear. and when it goes back down under 2k rom it will spring back into normal position. lol i do have a lot of play in this shifter. my bushings might be shot. feels sloppy.
