shiffing into 5th and 6th

when you shift, does it seem like u have to try harder to get it in 5th then if u were going into 3rd(like u have to force it up and over that way, not just let it slide up in there easy). same way wit sixth i have kinda pull it back and hold it to go in. if i dont hold it ova it wants to "spring" into 4th. just a thought. its done it since i have had the car and wanted to no if it was normal! any1 else have this problem

Well, if you mean you have to push to the right and up, then yeah thats normal...then 6th you have to push to the right and down...

The shifter defaults to the center of 3rd and 4th...

Its awkward for me since I came from a Miata and your hand is leveled with the shifter...unlike the MS3 where you have to kind of reach down to shift...
I find it awkward as well when I am shifting to 5th and 6th...though I don't force it in...I do though have to push to the right so I can get into 5th or 6th instead of 3rd and 4th...

you have to work the springs in. park somewhere and just work the shifts from 4->5 and 5->6 back and forth again and again for a few min. things got a lot smoother for me after a few min of loosening the springs.

I've noticed that the spring is very tight on the MS3 and MS6. It's just something your arm eventually gets used to doing. It even prevents a straight shot from 5 to 6...I have to pause, push right and then down. Mine hasn't loosened up at all.

Let me tell you that it is a good thing!

If you all remember the GTS Celicas of 2000 and newer, with their 6-speed FWD platform, you'll remember just how much of a PITA that trans was.

I had one, number 261 to the states in fact. Problem is, the first 4000 or so were afflicted with so many problems in the trans and shifter, it was a worthless car to me. The point I'm getting to is that the 6 speed trans had a weak set of springs in it, and was loose like you are wishing it were. I can tell you that this is BAD. With an engine that wanted to rev right to redline, with a VVTLi valvetrain redlined at 7,800 and engine damage occured at 8300-8500, you had no room for error whatsoever. A large number of people (myself thankfully excluded) ended up bending valves and breaking other stuff and having it covered under warranty because the shifter springs were so weak. You'd shift from 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd, 3rd to....2nd!!! This would be because the shifter wanted to go back to 2nd, and 4th was almost invisible to it, especially when you were really racing the thing. I got lucky the one time it happened to me, as I wasn't fully redlined in 3rd, I was about 500rpm shy. So when I missed, it went just slightly past red, and I caught it with the clutch in time.

Later on, Toyota released a recall/TSB that replaced the shifter springs with a different design, one that heavily centered the stick (and felt better for it as well.)
