One place I've found that doesn't do this is Carmax. Roll in there and they'll make you an offer for it, whether you buy a car from them or not.
Unfortunately, in my experience, they offer you about $500, regardless of what car you bring in! Asshats.

yeah, carmax is really hit or miss. they pay thier salesmen pretty poorly from my understanding and although they tout thier no haggle sticker prices, those sticker prices are usually pretty high in comparison to what you could negotiate down to. somone here got a good deal i think from them on his p5, they bought it outright for 11k but that was almost two years ago.

Lisa, Since your just thinking about it right now, shoot for the moon. List the car in several places for private sale. Just look up what dealers are charging for them and charge a little less, it should be around $11K. THis way if you get a solid offer, you'll get several thousand more then you will from a dealer and your not likely to take a bad deal (like a trade in) as your in no rush.

thats a game i learned. go in there looking at the top model, ask them to price your car, and then work your way down. for example, test drive an rx-8, ask what the value of the p5 is, then say "oh, i was hoping to get more than that, let me drive a 3" then there kinda stuck with the higher price on the trade.

Lisa, I bought my P5 last november for $10,800 with 28,000. 5spd, cloth, sunroof, chrome stockies, in dash changer, NO ABS. The rear bumper has a small crunch in the corner and a key mark down one side but other than that it's perfect. Most dealers were around the $13,000 mark when I was looking...and I looked quite alot. I have since removed the in dash changer so if you want it, you can have it for $50. It works perfectly and looks perfect. I'm in northern virginia (Leesburg).
You guys are funny. I have over 100000km's (60k miles) on mine, it's paid for and there is no way in hell I am getting rid of mine...love it to much. (weakest)

I work at Carmax. Honestly, they offer a fair value on the cars. They use Black Book and a huge database of cars that they have bought and sold in the past. They are not trying to rip you off on your trade-in. I do agree that if you have some negociation skills, that you could probably haggle another dealer down below the sticker price at Carmax, but there are lots of people (myself included) that just hate that game, and would rather not play it. But since this topic is about trade-in value, they do offer a fair value.
The reason that some of you were offered $0 dollars is because they most likely could not sell your car on the lot and would have to auction it off. The value they would get at auction would be less than the cost of selling the car at auction. Hence the $0...
