2012 Mazda5
I've looked around the web and forum about this "flashing" light on the speedometer display. I've had the Mazda5 for 4 months and never noticed it till this morning! I go in the car at least 3 days a week, in the dark, to place a note in the car for my wife, never noticed it! Now it's flashing every 2 seconds, like the manual says. Although it never talks about it staying on without the key!

Funny thing is other people have NOT noticed it either, even years later, then one day - ta-da - it's flashing!

Is it REALLY supposed to stay on 24/7 when no key is in the ignition?

Still seems strange I never noticed this before.

One other thing, wouldn't you think it would blink when the keys are out and the car is LOCKED!!!! It's blinking unlocked in my garage! Makes you wonder some times!

My car has always done that. Now you have me thinking: I wonder if it flashes whenever an authorized key is NOT making the connection that will allow it to start. I think the added benefit is that it can appear to be an armed alarm to your average 14 yo delinquent.

Pretty sure this is typical of most immobilizer systems. Just letting you know, that yes you may break in or have already broken in or maybe the car was unlocked, but the car won't start without an authorized key.

My GT has the factory alarm and I did read that if you lock the doors and then shut them, the alarm is not on. It may still have the immobilized functionality, but the alarm is not on. It took me forever to get my wife to lock it with the key fob only.

Regarding the actual topic on hand, mine flashes.

Interesting... Mine is an 09 GT like yours and while I knew about the immobilizer I wasn't sure if had an actual alarm. I'll have to give that a try

Thanks for all your responses - appreciate it. I came to the conclusion I'm blind! Mr. "I notice everything", ahhh except the flashing light on the dash! :)

Even checked Mazda's in the parking lot at work, sure enough, red flashing light!!!Good grief!

Wait, GTs come with a factory alarm?!?! Learned something new today -yay! Anyone know where the alarm brain u located? Time to add a shock sensor :)

@OP - if no flashin light, how is it going to deter (I use this very loosely) thieves?

I have the 2007 GT & just notice it is flashing after 7 years. Is it really flashing the whole time that I was blind?

I searched online and found here.

Also, is the odometer supposed to be 'off' when the car turn off? I just realized I can still read when the car turn off.

Please help!!!

I'll try to remember to check when I'm home. Bump the thread if you don't get a response.

Silent, you need to read the manual bro. LOL, you didn't know it had an alarm or that you could adjust the wiper sensitivity. The only reason I know is because it was in the manual. The interesting thing to remember is that the key fob activates the alarm. If you lock the door, then shut it: no alarm. I have no idea why that is.

And the odo in my 06 stays on for a minute or three after I shut her off and remove the key. I am fairly certain it doesn't stay on all the time.

IIRC the odo is always on in the Mazda but everything else turns off. OTOH, the Volvo leaves the gas gauge on but turns everything else off incl the odo. I am many many miles away from both right now, so I could be totally absolutely wrong.

Now this is confusing, Robotaz - off, thaxman - on.

You mean Secondtyme - off, thaxman - on.

I was just thinking more about this, instead of working of course, and I realized that I do have to go inside to get the keys and read the mileage when I service stuff. It does normally turn off.

*EDIT* Wife just confirmed it's off without the keys.

Speaking of not working, i sat in mine at lunch today and confirmed that the odo and trip odo shut off at approximately 5 minutes after key removal on my 06 Touring. What can I say there wasn't much going on today LOL HTH

I would like to hope that it is simple programming errror that a dealer can fix within a few minutes. Of course they can still charge an arm and a leg for a few minutes of work they are a dealer after all. Hope you make out OK
