does anyone know how to touch up scratches at wit home materials?

I have almost two years detailing experience, and my best advice would be Meguiars Scratch X. It comes in a black tube. It softens the paint a little to fill in the scratch, so you need to do a coat of wax over it, but it works well on small scratches. If its too deep it wont work that well though

i have 2 scracthes, one not so bad on my hood from rocks or something, but the other is on my passenger side door from a shovel when i got my car stuck in the snow... ugh, that sucked bad, its not very long (2-3 inch) but it is deep... not sure if i should take it to a shop or try it myself.... the hood one i think what tphskap^^^^ said should work fine.... other ideas? (slight thread jack but same problem....)

you can buy some touch up paint for it but be careful because if u dont use touch up paint right you can end up with a bump instead of a scratch

check http://www.langka.com/ .. allows you to put on the touch up paint w/ a bump, and then has tools to smooth out the bump.

I would like to try that stuff for my rock chips but cant really trust a product called "blob eliminator"....anybody have any insight or experience with this product?

well, mazda sent me touch up paint in the mail when i bought the car. That works great for all the chips i get on this thinly painted car. Very light scratches that arent deep can be hidden with some waxes, but from my experience with working at a body shop, we always used a buffer and rubbing compound but dont do it yourself as its easy to wear down the paint to nothing. Deep scratches....youre on your own on that one.

hey man i was a profesionally auto detailer for like 2 years if the scratch is wide your screwd just take somthin to smooth the inside of the scatch out so the touch up paint will stick better only move the brush in one direction an dont have too much paint on the brush or it will bubble and run if the scratch is thin you might be able to get it buffed out take it to a local detail shop and theyll do it but for a price then thats where you ask your self how bad the scratch is and if you love your car enough to pay to get it fixed lol good luck man

On black cars, you could use black shoe polish. It worked well for me on my wifes car. Or you can buy that turtle wax color stuff. I've never used it but its worth a try.

If and when you use touch up paint on scratches and chips, you should wash the surface with alcohol, wet sand, wash again let it try, fill in the area with paint with a tooth pick, YES a tooth pic, let it cure over night, wet sand again and buff it.

Any other way, and the repair wont last long.

Thats probably true, I just did that to cover up some scratches when she sold it. I have no idea how long it actually lasted.

I got all kinds of scratches, but I have been scared to use my touch up paint since I think it will leave it looking lumpy.

There should be an appearance faq. I don't really even know how to properly buff or wash or wax my car.

Sanding the paitn with like 1500 or 2500 gritt sand paper, I prefer using 2500, it's safer, it will dull the paint so you have to buff after.

Do you actually wet the sandpaper?

Do you have to have a buffing machine to buff or can you do it by hand?
