What was the final draw to make you want to take off the SSP??
Well, because aside from taking the transmission apart, I've done everything I could (within my knowledge) to get rid of the *THUD!* in 1st and 2nd engagement point. Which included
- lubing the reverse lock plate on the shifter
- adjusting the shifter (which helped a little, but not enough)
- Swapping the OEM counterweight back on, (did nothing but made the shifts sloppier). This was the final step that tipped me towards removing the SSP, by process of elimination.
Finally, a local tire shop guy was telling me short shift plates are bad for the car and several online sources say it's bad for the syncros too. Apparently because the shifts are so much shorter/faster, the syncros will wear out faster. And if I have to think twice about getting into 1st and 2nd ALL THE TIME, it kind of takes the fun out of driving.
So I finally went ahead and removed the short shift plate, and I can't be happier
