Satellite + Stock HU

I've searched the small amount of info thats on here about incorporating the two, and can't find what I need.

My system isn't in yet, but its sitting here in my room, as usual. I've worked to keep the stock HU (for theft reasons), alpin 5ch, two sets of component speakers, and a JL sub.

Now, after road tripping with a friend with XM radio, I want to incorporate it into what I've got, BUT, don't want to use the FM modulator to transmit the signals.

I read on here that someone had purchased something from David Navone that let them hard wire the XM tuner directly into the head unit (something having to do with the input for the MD or casette on the back of the stock HU). I've gone to DN site and can't find what I think will be it.

I just wanted to run it by everyone here to see if they knew, before I called and made a fool of myself on the phone with the David Navone people ...(not knowing adapter names and such).

Not sure about the adapter thing, but I am thinking easiest installation would be the fm modulator. Trust me, I understand why you dont want to use it, I wouldnt either. But, when it comes down to it, it would be alot easier to take it out if need be. My .02

Just so you know XM and Siruis are not true CD-Quality sound. Hell, there is so much compression going on there, you might as well listen to broadcast mp3's. In all actuality (and barring the fraunhoffer institutes Intellectual Property rights), you are.

Do some quick research on satellite radio - hard to find whitepapers that give any amount of detail, but it has been pretty well reverse engineered.

Alot of that sounds like foreign language to me

but, I have searched and found no stream rate, only a few comments on the board saying they play on par with 192 kbps mp3s burned to a CD

so...in your opinion sound difference between FM mod and direct connect is minor?

I originally used the stock head unit and an FM modulator with XM. Compared to CD qualtiy I was severely disappointed.

I went ahead and changed the head unit with a JVC with an AUX input on the front of it. The sound difference is beyond words. The difference is huge to me. The sound quality is much better withn some sort of direct input.

maybe someone with a stock unit with the cassette or MD attached could sell one to us to destroy in the name of reverse engineering.
i just cannot figure out what triggers the MD/Tape button to activate for audio input.

i have sirius in 2 cars(camry w/ 6 speakers and P5), replaced the HU's (kenwoods) and sound quality is awesome.....i don't think running sat. thru the factory radio is doing the sound quality justice......IMO

I have no issues with the sound quality, however, what is an issue, is the damn bridges and overhanging trees that block the radio waves and cause a blackout for a second or two....

its been raining here every day during the past week...and absolutely no interferencing. The only other issues than the trees and bridges is the rare dense morning fog.

If you are debating its well worth the cash. No commerical is absoltuely amazing. And, if you dont like it, its only for 15 months which is upfront. So if you do hate it, its not an annoying cost each and every month afterwards. I suggest trying it out....why not?

I've been looking at www.sylfex.com who supposed has an aux input that they're finishing up and Soundgate supposedly does as well......but who knows when.

I know this thread is kinda old....let me know what you ended up doing.
