Satellite Radio Question

Hi all,

I'm new here, so I'm sorry if this has been asked a million times. I didn't see an answer in recent threads.

I bought a used 2011 CX-9 AWD. It's loaded - leather, blue tooth, etc.
I don't have the navigation system, just the radio with the AM, FM, AUX and SAT buttons.

My question is, when I push the SAT button on the radio nothing happens. No messages on the screen, nothing. So I'm assuming satellite radio isn't installed on my car. Is that correct? And if it's not, since it has the button, is there a way to have it installed so it works with the button on the radio?

Right now I'm using an after market unit plugged into my AUX but I'm soooo sick of the wires everywhere.

Can someone help me?

All 2011 CX-9 audio systems are SIRIUS (SAT) compatible, but the SIRIUS Receiver is not standard on most models. Only Touring and Grand Touring models with the optional Moonroof/Bose/SIRIUS Package had the SIRIUS receiver already installed.

The easiest way to figure out if you have it or not is by whether you have the Moonroof. If you have the Moonroof, your CX-9 also has the Bose Audio with SIRIUS included. If not, you have the standard audio setup that is SIRIUS-ready but doesnt have the receiver.

For all other models, Mazda offered the SIRIUS hardware as a dealer-installed accessory. It is still available and retails for $356.90 ($274.95 for the SIRIUS Receiver Kit and $81.95 for the Installation Kit). The dealer that Ive bought parts and accessories from for the past nine years sells it for $308.79 (plus free shipping). Heres a link to the product on their site- SIRIUS Kit

I have a 2012 CX-9 Grand Touring FWD and, to be honest, I found it a bit irritating that a vehicle already priced over $35k didn't include a premium sound system, satellite radio and/or power moonroof as standard features. The Moonroof/Bose Package added another $2255 to the price. But at least you can add the SAT radio easily if you don't mind spending a a few hundred bucks!

One other bit of advice- the SIRIUS subscription packages can get pricey, especially if you choose a monthly plan once you calculate how much it ends up costing over 12 months. I almost cancelled my SIRIUS service a few months ago because it just wasn't worth the expense anymore. But I learned from some other folks on here that you can negotiate with SIRIUS for a lower price and save a substantial amount of money! I paid $14.99/month for the first 18 months or so ($179.88/year) and after 15-20 minutes of haggling, I now pay $89.95/year for the same programming! =)
