Rust Proofing

Im just wondering if I should buy a rust proofing treatment for my P5. Im currently living in Ottawa, where the winters can be harsh on a car.

I get soo many opinions that Im not sure anymore. Some people are telling me I should take the Oil treatment (not too happy with the "drilling" and the potential dripping situation) and others are telling me to take the Wax treatment (Mazda dealership).

Any feedback and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. I think Mazda has a warranty on rust protection and when I asked the sales rep, he told me there's no need to protect the car because it already has a rust protection.

I dont have an answer for you, Im looking forward to what the "experts" say. What I think I am going to do is the oil treatment. But will see how the rest of this thread goes....I might change my mind.;)

Ummmm....

I got the dealership treatment. 400 bucks I think, and I would also like to know (even though it's after the fact) if it was worth it. One thing to note however is this is for internal rusting, not external. If you chip your hood, it's gonna rust no mater what treatment you get.

I had the oil treatment done on my P5. I smells bad, very drippy the first week, then oil oozes out from joints all over, and they have to drill holes. It is very messy when it's hot. But this is, I beleive, the most effective system.

I paid the $400 on my last car to get the "wax" treatment, and it is worthless. The stuff is too thick to reach everywhere, and you have to get it inspected by the dealer after 3 years and then every year. And if you read the fine print on the contract, the dealer CAN charge you for the inspection/stuff... And guess what, rust appeared in the second year...AND they also drilled holes.

It's up to you, if you plan on keeping your car for 10 years, better protect your investment. But if it's a rental, don't waste money for someone else.

Are the drill holes noticable?
My brother told me that the oil picks up dirt and its really messy. Is this only the case for a week and then its clean?
Im planning on having the car for only about 5 years. Should I still bother (I dont want rust)?

I got the underbody coat done, not by the dealer but by some local place. It did drip a lot the first week of so, but after that it was all good. No complaints yet, but then again winter hasn't started yet. I plan on keeping my P5 FOREVER!

Later:)

Yes the holes are showing, but they use black plastic plugs to cover them. The oil does pick up dirt, which is good 'cause the oil stays where it should (where you want protection), but where the oil oozes (joints), you see a lot of dirt (washing the car makes it disapear).

I keep my cars 6 to 10 years and it does make a difference (no rust gets you a better price when selling).

Well the rep at the Service Desk never told me they had to drill holes for the Wax. She also told me that the Oil treatment is not recommended for my P5 because after a while the plastic bands inside the door could crack and its messy??

I'm considering Anti-Rouille Metropolitaine for the Oil treatment... any opinions or experiences??

How much time before the smell goes away??

Its not really oil, its more like a thick wax or tar. I don't really know about it staining the driveway. Mine lives in the garage, it left little black sopts that looks like wax. I would go scrape it off if I was home. (im at college, 200 miles away)

Sorry i couldnt answer your question. Im going home this weekend. I'll scrape it off for reference purposes.

Antirouille Metropolitain uses oil, I know that's where I go. Rubber gaskets are affected by the oil, but seem ok. Smell inside the car takes about 2 weeks to vanish, but the car will smell oil when it's hot outside.

Antirouille Metropolitain has changed the way they do things since they became ISO14001 : VERY MESSY because they do not wash the exterior of the car like they used to. It took me three hand washes before the paint looked shiny again. But the protection is there.

It's like I said, it's up to you, you're the judge to decide if it is worth it.

I got my oil treatment done at Krown. It has to be done every year and it costs $110 CAD. They do drill holes but you won't see them with all the doors closed. It dripped for about 3-4 days but I don't have the oily smell inside. Actually I like the fact that they drill holes as that's the only way to get the protection inside the rocket panel...where rust tends to develop first.

I also did the rubber undercoat myself with the spray stuff I got at Canadian Tire in addition to the Krown rust proofing. Takes about 4 bottles to cover the entire underbody but that's only 30 bucks compare to $200 most places charge.

I remember Consumer Report did a testing on rust proofing service and they concluded Krown is the most effective if you do it every year.

In my opinion that number should be 5 years in a Canadian climate. You will likely see rust, possibly preventable to some degree, well before a car is 10 years old if you do nothing.

I have used Krown on all my vehicles for over 10 years. Yes, they drill holes (they are capped and hidden), but that's what makes the treatment effective... getting into the doors and rockers and body panels with the stuff. And yes, it drips, and does tend to pick up dirt, for a few weeks. But it's worth it in terms of long-term protection.
