Speaking from the city with the highest gas prices in the country, the impact really is exaggerated in my opinion. Driving through about a tank of gas a week on my work commutes, I budget for $250/month in fuel costs. I have avoided the 15-20% increase in fuel cost by simply limiting short trips during the week. Hell, I wasted 3x more money by eating out once a week. Fuel costs are part of my (and should be everyone's) fixed budget. There are many more areas of discretionary spending that can easily make up for a few bucks at the pump once a week.
If you want to run 87 octane, buy (more $$$$) a boost controller and take the fun out of the MS3...at which point you might as well trade it for a Mazda3.
