Someone in another forum asked about tire sizes. I run 205, 1o over, and I know there are at least 3 people I have talked to who run 215 width tires on their stock rims. Can y'all speak up so I dont think I'm imagining things, and to offer our fellow forum member some advice?
Thx,
Brook

what sort of advice are you looking for? whether they fit (yes)? what size to use (215/45/16)?

well, i dont have stock rims but i was going to move to 215/40/16 from my current setup of 205/40/16

really it depends on the width of the wheel. I think my wheel is 7" wide, so it will fit tires up to about 215.

from what i've been told, you can take the stock setup, increase the width one size up, and decrease the profile one size down, and it will fit fine on the rim. Ask a few local tire shops, they'll know for sure.

tire manufacturers list the rim width requirements for each tire on their websites. Generally, as along as the wheels is 6.5" wide a 215 will fit fine, but check the specific tire just to be sure.

that won't tell you if the tire will fit on the rim, but whether you're going to screw up your gearing and speedo with the new size.

you should just do the math to figure out if a tire will be the right diameter:

(section width/25.4) * (aspect ratio) * 2 + wheel diameter = tire diameter.

examples

195/50/16:
(195/25.4) * (.50) * 2 + 16 =
(7.677) * (1) + 16=
=23.677 inches

215/40/16:
(215/25.4) * (.40) * 2 +16=
8.464 * .8 + 16=
=22.77 inches

23.67-22.77= .9

so the 215/40/16 size is going to be ~1" shorter than the stock size, which means ~3" smaller around.

i was talking about going from that 19/50/16 setup to a 205/45/16 . . . does that change anything?

no, just plug the new numbers into the equation. i was just trying to give an example...it works for any size.

in my experience, 205/45/16 works ok. it's a little bit shorter. i'd go w/ a 205/50/16 if it were my car. *shrug*
