RollJam - please be aware

And it will gets worse with internet-facing devices. The IoT will be a disaster, there are already botnets infesting many home automation and CCTV systems.

This is why I carry. It is also why everything I own is insured. Literally everything. From my weapon-light to the rifle it's on to my bar of soap in the shower. Every time you invent a new way to retain what you own, some politician or thief or thug invents a new way to try to repossess it.

While they've got these vile creatures contained inside one "hackers conference", why don't the seal the doors and fill it to the roof with acid. They should do the same to anyone who attempts to purchase anything from them.

Is there a "sex offenders" conference too?

Hmmm... That hasn't been my experience in the short 35 years I've been an adult. I've never had a problem retaining what I own. Actually, I wish I were better at getting rid of stuff.

I assume you don't know what you are talking about...
People attending these conferences are normal people, they are not criminals. If they were criminal they wouldn't publish their findings - allowing corporates to improve their security or at least making everone aware of the potential security risk, so they can take their own pre cautions.

Conferences like these help making stuff more secure.

You could be right but this guy who has invented a device for stealing property and that doesn’t make him a good guy to me. If he channeled his skill into defeating crime and terrorism that would be another matter.

Exactly.
For years, the industry was rife with (criminal?) neglect by selling you insecure tech an claiming it to be safe. If you have a beef with anyone is with the people you bought products from, not the people that publish what crappy security are in the products you were fooled into getting.

A very basic and crude garage door opener is safe if somebody doesn’t invent a device to copy it.

It's utopia to believe there's no criminals - I would rather have the guys at DefCon hack the devices, publish their findings for the companies to fix THEIR problems.

It's almost the same as saying that there's no need for the banks to put locks on their vaults - if there was no thieves... But that's never going to happen.

If nobody raised the problems, then no development would exist - and we would probably not be as evolved as we are.

"If he channeled his skill into defeating crime and terrorism that would be another matter." He IS fighting crime! The way he is skilled to do. Making the companies aware that they need to take OUR security serious and not just cross their fingers that nobody will hack them.

The question is how much $$ and time would it require to open your garage door without your remote. Using crypto properly, it would not open even if the criminals have unlimited amount of $, access to the most powerful quantum computer for "age of the universe" years, even if the criminals have access to all radio communications, past and present and can capture, modify or block any part of the communication at any time.

In current state of affairs, the answer is $32 and very few minutes.

I saw an article recently where they don't even have to get your garage opener code. They can just snake a coat hanger or thin bendable wire in through the side and snag the pull release (the little red cord that hangs down). Once the release is disengaged you can lift the door by hand.
They showed a garage repair guy do it in 20 seconds. He thought it would be harder but he said it wasn't.

I wired wrapped both my releases so they can't be messed with. If I have a power failure and need to open the door I'll cut the wire wrap.

Spring Loaded Center Punch Nail Set...

"Mike M" stated in part...

Yes, and a crowbar is cheaper and also allows quick access. The crowbar also works great for smash and dash operations. I'm not too worried about either.

Before making my following comments to Mike's above post, let it be known I'm NOT advocating the illegal breaking and entering of a vehicle, but rather what I have used in the past when I was a licensed EMT Para-medic with the fire department and ambulance corps.

What I used in place of the crowbar, hammer, etc. was a spring loaded center punch nail set, which costs anywhere between $9.00 - $30.00 depending on who you purchase it from. The center punch nail set is small and compact, light... but yet rugged enough that one need not worry about it breaking.

Depending upon the situation, I would either place the pin/needle part against the glass (side or rear) windows and just push. Instantly the glass would shatter into little pieces. If the victim was right next to the window you would grey tape the window and then punch it... allowing the window to be removed in one piece with minimal pieces flying around.
