got a killer deal on front struts. almost half off. monroes too.
Did you install those front struts? If so what do you think of them? I may need to replace my six year-old KYBs with OEMs on the rear and Monroes on the front - or Monroes all the way around.

I got two rear/rearward lateral control arms for $10+ apiece from the Closeout parts page at https://www.rockauto.com/RSS/vehiclefeeds.php?carcode=1416833&m=wc&l=en&html=true. They're the TRW brand ones and are made in Turkey. I will probably install them soon and wait for a good price on the rear/forward lateral arms and the trailing arms before I buy them.

I pulled a bolt on my driver's side trailing arm to get a better look at the bushing. It's cracked, and so are the lateral arm bushings. Both are shown below. Anyone know if the spot where the trailing arm attaches to the body (below, where the oval hole is) is a good place for a jack stand? It sure looks like it.

Yeah, that's the proper spot to jack up the rear end.

My car was so rusted out that the jack punched through the frame rail at that spot.

I had to get a metal plate welded in on the worst side.

I added the Wholesaler Closeout Parts : 2003 MAZDA PROTEGE5 page to my RSS feed in Outlook for fun and noticed the page updated at least daily. It's no fun to try and compare changes day-to-day that way, so I installed the Web Alert app on my phone to (hopefully) do that for me. It's supposed to let me know about any changes to that page. PCB posted the link for the 2002 model above, although results will not likely be much different.

Anyone got a better free app or website to track changes for that particular page?

My two rear struts and rubber spring seats (OEM) will arrive soon from Mazda Stuff. The rears weren't too much more than what I'd pay for the good stuff on RockAuto.

I wonder if there's any difference between the two lists?
They are the same car except the 2003 and 2003.5 had some upgrades, but those upgrades probably wouldn't affect the parts available at Rockauto as far as I know?
They would probably have to be OEM parts?

I didn't realize that it was an ongoing list.
Do things get added, or is the stock just being sold?

There shouldn't be any difference in parts between the '02 and '03 models, but I guess you may as well track the model year you actually have just to be safe. I've only run across one OEM part where Mazda said it would only work on the '02 - and yep, it was an OEM part. I doubt aftermarket part makers would ever make a distinction between the two model years.

I imagine stock gets added and removed to/from the closeout list all the time. If they discontinue/absorb a part from another vendor's stock that happens to fit our cars and they mark it to sell at a discount, it automatically gets added to that list. Once it sells out, they remove it.

Speaking of parts, my OEM rear struts and a couple other parts arrived today from Mazda Stuff. They were only packed in the strut boxes themselves and those two large-ish boxes were taped together. This is pretty clever but it doesn't afford as much protection as putting everything in one big box - but that may be how they came to have the best price on OEM rear shocks, sooo...

Note the manufacturer of the strut. :) Going OEM was overkill, but I really want to see if I can restore the factory ride.

So after rebuilding the strut/spring/mount assembly and halfway through installing it, I couldn't get the brake line to fit in its support on the strut because the support had gotten pinched in shipping (see brake line support scraped up and poking out of box in one of the pics above). I was already a few hours into this project and was in no mood to take the strut back off, so I used a pry bar as best I could to straighten the support out. Of course, the brake line support was on the interior side of the strut and I had to drag a rubber brake line through surfaces I was marring with a pry bar, and that added to my frustration. I've sent a note to Mazda Stuff about this. I think they're generally a good outfit, but my first experience with them was mixed.

While looking for a replacement upper radiator hose at Rock Auto today, I noticed that they had two different prices for the same part. The part from their Closeout page was $3 less than the same part listed on their "regular" page. Any reduced prices on the Closeout page are usually also reflected on the regular pages, and I doubt they're doing this intentionally. So even if you've already selected your part, you may wish to look at the Closeout page to see if it's priced lower there. For fun, I added the same part to my cart from the Closeout page and from the regular page as shown below. They're both coming from the same warehouse, so location is not a variable here. :)
