Rock Chip - treatable

:
2021 Acura RDX
Hello!

I have a 17 GT. While putting Aquapel on the windshield today, I noticed a rock (Im guessing nick - its about the size of a toothpick head). I can feel it when I rub my finger over it, but Im not sure that its repairable at the current size? It is on the passenger side.

Why do these windshields crack so often? My fear is that if it ever got to the point of breaking, replacing it leaves glass pieces that can scratch my paint and leather interior. Has anyone had this issue.

So, is this repairable, or should I just leave it for now?

Thanks!

Yes it is repairable. A reputable glass repairer should be able to fix it.

Up to you if you want to replace it now or later. Just be aware that it is possible that another jolt over a bump might lead to spider cracks forming and making the issue worse.

If it*s that small, clear nail polish may do the trick.

It won*t shatter and cave in on you ruining your interior, unless you have a highly extreme impact from a wreck or huge object.

It will totally stay together when removed for replacement, even when shattered.

5 dollar kit can fill it. But its hard to fix. Cracks are easier. Its hard to get solution in there. Maybe a heat gun

Toothpick head? Probably not. I'd get a professional opinion though.

Would I need the camera recalibrations if the windshield needed replacement? I would imagine that would be expensive (Im just talking hypothetically here)

You're getting WAAYY ahead of yourself here. The damage you're talking about probably doesn't even fall within the normal parameters of repair, let alone replacement! Take it to a reputable glass shop and they will tell you if you need to worry about it. My guess, from your description, is that it hasn't even penetrated to the laminate and is therefore not something to be concerned with. And, BTW, this has nothing to do with the quality of glass Mazda does or doesn't use. It falls under that broad classification generally described as "sh#t happens".

Well said.

For what it's worth, Colorado is like the capital of getting rock chips/cracked windshields every year. My CX-5 original windshield lasted almost 4 years before it's first major crack (it had chips that got repaired). The replacement windshield is almost a year old now and not so much as a chip so far.

Compare that to my Jeeps that needed new windshields every single year.

Is it me that thinks the OP seems to be having quite a number of issues with their CX-5 judging by the threads & posts created by them (scratch)

Actually, its been pretty solid! I am just OCD and like to find out what I can about issues I encounter or may in the future.

Sorry! I do love the vehicle!

I know I wouldnt need my windshield replaced for this, lol! Rather, I was making an appointment to have Safelite look at the chip, and they offer the camera recalibratation. So, I thought I would just ask you guys if that applied to our Mazdas.

I worded my post earlier wrong when I mentioned a windshield replacement. That was implied to ask about the cameras.

Sorry 😐
