Road Trip Probs, New Rims, Rubbing, and Other Nonsense

So thanks to the debris covered southern roads, I took a piece of metal to the tire on the way to the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. Just one stop on a road trip from my summer job in Tuscaloosa, Alabama back to school in Boston, Mass. Tire couldn't be fixed and I was introduced to the wonderful world of our rare MP5 limited edition tires that can't be found in any of the tire warehouses or dealerships in Nashville or Memphis. Options to get back on the road without spending 4-5 business days in Nashville waiting for a tire were limited, but came down to 1) renting a car, leaving my wheels at the airport, and then slamming down to Nashville from NY when the tire came in or 2) new rims, new tires. Enkei Shoguns (17x7) (Picture of them here http://www.tires-n-parts.com/wheels/enkei/shogun.htm) were the best of the available 6 options that could be mounted same day in Nashville. Got on the road with our new wheels and Toyo Proxes FZ4 215/50-17s. Which of course rubbed like mad, turned around, went back to the tire place, they swapped them for 205/50-17s and we were rolling, just some nasty rear rubs on big bumps and tight turns. Paid $1232 total for wheels, rims, installation, tax, but didn't get to sell my stock rims/tires (sitting at a tire shop in Nashville if you need a set, they'll probably hook you up cheap). Rubbing got better when I got my friend's bags and a bunch of my stuff out of the rear, but still ugly on big bumps. Was fine after I finally dropped some rubber blocks in the springs this afternoon. Didn't last too long as one of the two on the driver rear has migrated away from where I put it on the spring and one is already missing on the passenger rear and the other one is a half-inch away from finishing splitting in two. I'm going to get the fender rolled or the camber adjusted when I get back to Boston unless someone thinks there's rubber blocks out there that won't get messed up with my crazy driving on NYC streets:eek: Guess I shouldn't have expected too much out of $3.99 per pair jammies from Autozone. Sorry for the long post, needed to vent a bit... our tire situation sucks, but I guess I don't have to worry about that anymore.:D PIctures of the new rims will follow soon, got the first compliment on them today...

The situation sucks, but I like how you where forced to upgrade your rims. All and all, I think this was a positive thing, I bet your car looks even nicer.

Im not prepared to buy new rims but Im just looking for an excuse just like what happened to you.

I'm very happy with the rims, the car definitely looks better now. Rims were something I wanted to do further down the road after some other mods. Guess I just have to suck it up...

Back from my road trip as well. About 5000km's.

After spending 30 minutes washing grasshoppers from the front of the car I did I walk-around for any new nicks/scratches.

A few rock nicks in the hood (even though I have a plastic shield), nothing some touch-up paint won't fix...but you're right...the paint does appear thinner than usual.

Also got a nice rock in the windshield, hopefully have that fixed up in the next few days as well.

For the record - the new tranny worked perfectly.
