Replacing CX-3 Rear Shock Assembly

Hi everyone,

I have a 2016 Mazda CX-3 grand touring AWD. I have a broken rear shock top mount on the left rear. The gasket has come off from the top of the shock mount. It's a similar issue to this CX-5 that was posted back in 2021.

The auto repair place, quoted me $950 to fix the issue by replacing both rear shock assembly with OEM parts. I'm curious if this is a good quote. when I look online and see the OEM parts for around $110 each, I am a little worried that the auto repair shop is gouging me on labor costs. Does $950 sound like a fair price? I also called my local Mazda dealer and the same repair was double the cost.

$220 parts

$730 labor

That is a quote for around 4 hours of labor. Probably right, but let's see what others think.

It doesn't take 4 hours to replace 1 shock. It should be 1 hour, tops. Warranty probably pays half that, if it's under warranty... that's why anything much more than that is ridiculous, especially when an alignment isn't needed and no other suspension parts needs to be removed to get it replaced

and, you don't need to replace the entire shock... mazda wants you to, and that's because the parts catalog doesn't list the mount separately... but aftermarket mounts are available cheap, or you can get an (expensive) OEM mount for a CX-5 and it'll fit: GBJD-28-380
you'll want a new self locking nut too: 9YB0-40-811

I would replace just the mount if the shock isn't bad... otherwise, I'd replace both rears at least, that way the car doesn't ride/handle weird with 1 new shock

The rear shocks are easier to replace than the front struts. It took me two hours to DIY (first-time working on shocks). I rented a lift for 4 hours and added 1.5 hours of tech help. In that session I also did one drain/fill of the transmission fluid. It was around $300 I recall.

The quote I got from my tire/alignment shop for replacing all four was $750 for labor, I bring my own parts.

After I started to notice this June that the ride was very bouncy, I went to a reputable local indie shop for a general inspection. I was told that the struts/shocks are worn and the passenger side rear was leaking. I had some doubts because of other aspects of the inspection so I chose to DIY instead. The rear shocks didn't show any sign of leaks when I checked before the replacement. They came off with no visible leaks. I fully support replacing all 4 at 153K miles to restore to fresh ride quality. I guess the shop reported a leak as a boost for me to do this right away.

This CX-3 had never been serviced by a dealership because obviously I have trust issues. 😁

That's good to hear because I've done the fronts and didn't think they were too bad.

Was that on a FWD or AWD car?

AWD... wait are they different in the rear? 😂

With the front I had help putting the springs on the new struts. Saw too many memes with springs killing enthusiasts.

I realized this might be different on a CX-5 with its independent suspension.
it still uses the same shock design as the low tech CX-3 suspension and attaches the same way lol

you can also get the dust boots meant for the mexican CX-3 that fits around the mount and covers all the way just past the bump stop.. it's stock on all CX-5s so it's easy to get and it just slips on... might protect the mount better

WHat does it mean for suspension to be independent? I don't think my rear shocks or front struts are holding hands in any way. 🤦
