Removing the metal exhaust tip...

What do you guys think about removing the metal exhaust ring on the rear bumper and clamping on a bigger exhaust tip to the exhaust. Do you think it would look more agressive to have a bigger tip clamped on to the exhaust more so then the stock tip mounted to the rear bumper?

Personally, I wish Mazda never came up with the "fake" exhaust tip... I hate it in everyway... It's like a 4.5" exhaust tip on a tiny exhaust. Looks stupid IMO from some angles because you can see right through them to the real exhaust and the ground...

Interesting idea you have though, I wonder if it's been done.

You know, those tips are held on with 2 small screws. I might head over to pep boys and see what they have. I think it would look a lot better then the stock tip.

I'd be interested in some pics if you do come up with something to try. I feel the same way about the looks of these fake pieces. You'd think fake tips clamped to the actual exhaust has to look better than this stock deal...

Yeah I totally agree. I'm going to get it done tomorrow and I'll take some pics and post them.

Obviously another solution is to get an exhaust system, but I've never been a fan of loud exhaust. I like my speed 6 quiet....

hey guys! i have a question regarding my timing belt.. i just rebuilt the head and put it back on,know iam trying to install the timing belt. i lined up the camshafts timing and as well as the crankshaft. replaced the tensioner,but for some reason everytime i try to slip on the beltt the stupid crankshaft moves on me.do i need to do something with the tensioner and the spring or what? oh by the way i have a 2003 mazdaspeed protege.2.0 turbo.. any advise will be greatly appreciated...thx in advance

I agree, another solution was to buy an aftermarket exhaust but I can't stand loud exhausts. Even on nice cars, I prefer a more quiet car.

Don't think it would work. Unless you chopped off the ends of your exhaust to leave room for "clamped" tips. If you just clamp on new tips over the stock ones its going to look tacky just like the stock setup.

Just get a catback exhaust .

I've got the tips in with my Corksport exhaust. They fill up the tips very very nicely. Looks really good. I'll get a picture when it's light out again

I have the Corksport 3" exhaust and removed the bumper inserts. I got tired of the exhaust vibrating from time to time on the inserts. It looks fine to me.

I seem to remember someone putting OEM TSX tips on the little exhuast tips and removing the fake ones. I just don't remember if it was this forum or the other mazda 6 forum. It came out looking good though.

YES!!! dude, we are a rare breed. I simply like the quiet "sleeper" status of the MS6... and try to keep to that theme.
Recently heard a buddies MS6 with the Magnaflow, full catback exhaust...

Its like, perfect. NOT loud at ALL, very subdued but yet has a nice low bassy tone to it. Quiet, but deep sounding, EXACTLY what i want. utube videos dont do it justice at all. If i ever switch from stock exhaust, i might go with that the Magnaflow!

OH about the OP, some people just paint em black so that they no longer look like purposeful fake tips. I think fake tips, either clipped to exhaust or freefloating are all kinda ricey. painting mine black soon.

I never really paid attention to the new design. Just looked at it in the 09+ forum and i see where you're coming from. Its not so much that i don't like the way our ms6 exhaust looks, i guess it could be worse... but it would have been nice to have actual tips on the exhaust rather than floating on the bumper. I looked at some of the older threads on this and some turned out pretty nice. OP, looking forward to what you come up with if you give it a go.

I haven't had any problems with mine vibrating after I realigned and reseated all my pipes in their hangers a couple days after I installed them.

i have a corksport exhaust sitting in the box at home waiting on me. With the stock inserts removed and new exhaust on the plastic bumper, did you notice any damage or warping of the plastic? Would you rec leaving the inserts in when using the corksport exhaust or taking them out?

I took them out simply because I was tired of hearing the rattle regardless of how the exhaust was situated/arranged. I had the car on the lift multiple times trying to twist the joints so it wouldn't and didn't have any luck. So I removed them. They've been like that for six months and I have no warping at all.
