Removing cup holders

I just purchased my new MX-5 on 12/23/08 and already need to modify it. I never drink beverages while driving, so I would like to use the center console cup holder to hold my sunglasses case and garage door opener. For that to happen, I need to remove the cup holder insert. There appears to be a small slot at the base of the cup holders that could take a screw driver blade. Would this line of attack be correct, or is there a better way to get the insert removed.

Thanks for any help.

Theres plenty of help with this mod over at Miata.net in the "NC" section.(band)

Yes, there is a thread on a replacement part from IL Motorsports that changes the cup holder to a big bin.

There are also a few DIY's projects for the same thing.

Had to think what DW was, just moved here from MA.

Not too bad. they seem to plow it well. I am not on it that much, since I take backroads to work.

Small world. I was born and raised in Nashua. Lived in Londonderry and Weare before moving to Wichita in '87. My last two seater in NH was a '59 Triumph TR3A. You gotta love the technology in the new iron. Just as much fun to drive, and they start every morning, rain or shine.

My IL cubby showed up yesterday. The install should make for a good weekend project.
