Rear shelf lifts with windows down?

I've had this happen 2 times to me so far.

Driving home from work on the highway, all 4 windows down. crusing @ 80 MPH or so I go to pass someone and hit 95-100 (yah, i know) and the front half of the shelf (the half nearest the rear sits) lifts up and blocks my rear view mirror until I slow down back to 80 or so.

I think they are held in place with magnets.

Anyone else have this happen to them?
 
if im going that fast, i'll throw the a/c on. at those speeds, it's more efficient anyway. i've never had that happen to me, but i think the easiest way to avoid it is to roll up the windows when you're on the interstate.
 
the few times that it happened to me were on days when the AC is overkill cuz it's not that warm out, and after sitting in a cube all day the fresh air feels good. Also, when I go to pass someone, it's not usually something that I can wait and roll up the windows for, then pass, then roll down again.
 
Well, there is a 100mph wind coming into the car. I'm sure Mazda engineers didn't think to design the rear shelf to withstand that.

but they did design a car with 263 HP, 280 FT/LB tq and a car that at 80 feels like you're doing 50MPH and at 90 feels like 65. LOL

+1 to that. not only is 60 mph on the ms3's speedo where like 35 is on my celica's, but the car feels like it's crawling when you're cruising on smooth road. i always end up going faster than i expect to just because it's so easy to do.

as far as the shelf coming up, i'd just get some industrial strength velcro from lowes or home depot. i used that stuff to hold my signal lights in place because they didnt fit right in the old car's body kit bumper, and i wanted to still be able to pull them out if necessary. if you throw a couple small pieces of that on the trunk lid, i dont think it'll go anywhere, and you'll still be able to remove it if you want.
 
Yah, I'm sure the fix for this would be relatively simple, I was just curious if anyone else out there experienced it or not. LOL
 
I had them down on my way home last night and my iPhone ready to snap a pic if it happened again, but the traffic was light enough that I didn't need to pass @ triple digits.
 
The rear section only has a pair of rubber bumpers on it. The front section has the magnets.

I actually had the front section lift while driving ~55-60, all the windows down, and the passenger rear seat folded down. Either it needs stronger magnets, or a bigger contact plate.
 
It's never happened to me...
The only time its happened is when I'm hauling something in the rear with half the seat folded down and only one magnet catching...then yes it flips up.

It shouldn't flip up with the rear seats closed... I think you should have Mazda look at it...don't say your were driving at +100 mph though...just say highway speeds...

I always drive with my windows down and its never happened to me...even nearing triple digits...

The front half of the shelf is curved where it meets the back of the seats; you should not be having this issue. Maybe your magnets are defective/too weak?

Mine is pretty hard to open with both magnets engaged...you really have to pull on it.

My service writter is a Mazda247 member, so it's already been posted, he can find it if he wants, though he's cool.

Side note, I took the rear head rests out of my car the day after I got her home. I felt that they obstucted the view out of my rear view mirror when I looked behind me. Not sure if with these head rests out + windows down + triple digit speed + crappy magnets = rear shelf flies up.

Here's a pic, no rear head rests and a small trunk monkey on that cable that lifts up the rear part of the cover:

What's a trunk monkey? I saw this on another thread once, but it was a picture of someone's trunk and it had a stuffed monkey in the trunk.

Actually looking at your avatar, I think it was you blue-sun, because it was in the Chicago, IL forums.
