Rear License plate holder

Hi,
I am wondering if someone could help me figure out how can I remove the black frame that is attached to the rear doar of my 2002 P5? This is on which license plate is mounted.
I do not want to destroy the frame and would like to mount it back.
Actually, my issue is that I can see paint coming off from where the screws of the license plate have hit the rear door. I am worried about rust problems down the road as the metal is exposed. I would like to take off the frame and do touch-up paint to protect the metal from rusting. Could someone help me find out how to do it? If it involves removing the plastic cover on the underside of the rear door, then I would need instructions for how to do it. I tried to pull that plastic out of its place to see if the black frame gets mounted with some screws through the rear door but couldn't do it :(
I am thinking of remounting the license plate with some protective restraint for the paint so that screws don't hit it again, but if there is a simple mod that takes care of it?
Thanks in advance,

Ali

there should be like 2 tabs that pop off and there are screws behind them ...i took mine off the first day .. and just have the plat sittin on the car...never had a problem with paint scratchin

There are like 2 plastic clips that are covering the screws. If you can't figure out how to remove the license plate maybe you shouldn't try to remove it??

NRRFrogmanP5,

Did you take out the black frame as well? Then you would have to close the existing holes for the frame and make new ones to hold the plate. Or did you use double-sided sticky tape?

Thanks for a quick response. I am starting to learn some basics.. am a new one in cars... so "alexlitov", if I won't ever try anything, I'll hear this same line from someone else may be 5 years down the road again :)

yeah the black frame is gone ...and on the illinois plates the screw holes for the frame one of the screws line up and then i drilled another hole in the plate to line it up with the one already there

Don't you hear the plate vibrating and hitting the door when you shut your door? Since it mounts only with two top screws, the rear end will vibrate.

I had examined the black plastic cover that is mounted on the rear door's inner side and couldn't find any tabs or anything removable there. I went out, opened the back door and tried to find it again.. its a plain big hard plastic cover.. no removal tabs or clips in there :(

Could you guide me to the location? R they on the side, center, back ...???

Thanks again,

Ali

if u can see where the screw are behind the plate then the tabs should be right on top of them just put ur licence plate up to the plastic and the tabs should be right be hind where the holes are...u might have to pry at em but they will pop open....and no i dont get much vibrating at all i have em screwed down really tight and my subs dont move em much either

I am afraid I was not clear enough.. I have been talking about removing the big plastic cover on the inside of the rear door. That cover is not the black frame that holds the license plate.

You are talking about the tabs on the black frame. I didn't know about them either. So, the frame is removable by opening that tab on the frame and unscrewing? What kinda screw is that? Is there a fixed nut on the other (inner) side of the door that tightens the screw?

I believe you must have had removed the inner black panel also to screw the license plate on the rear door. That inner panel is what I am asking about. How do you remove that sir? This inner panel is the black cover that runs across the total width of the rear door on the inner side - the trunk side.

Hope I am clear enough... and not annoying

Thanks,

Ali

haha not annoyin at all....well to take off the licence plate from u dont need to take off the panel.....ive never taken it off ..the licence plate frame is just 2 screws..and there is nothin behind the screws...i hope that helps
