rear license plate holder

Has anybody taken off the back license plate holder? I like to look of the license plate flush against the car without the holder, but it looks like I'd have to fill the existing holes and drill new ones. Has anybody done this mod?

For those of you in California, I found this DMV publication that you might find useful: V.C. Section 5201. It basically says that you can have your front license plate as high as 60 inches (5 ft) off the ground, which gives you an argument for being legal if you want to put your plate in the front windshield instead of attached to the front bumper. Someone please let me know if there is another CA publication that trumps my interpretation.

The other interpretation would be that glare from the windshield prevents the plate from being clearly visible. The statute does state that the plate must be clearly visible. It also states that no cover may be used with 2 exceptions a windshield not being one of them. I would be willing to bet you that if you got a ticket for it and fought it the judge would side with the cop.

"The California Vehicle Code (CVC) requires that all vehicles registered in the State of California have a front license plate.

5200 CVC - When two license plates are issued by the DMV for a vehicle, they shall be attached to the vehicle for which they were issued, one in the front and the other in the rear.
5201 CVC - License plates shall at all times be securely fastened to the vehicle for which they are issued so as to prevent the plates from swinging and shall be mounted in a position to be clearly visible, and shall be maintained in a condition so as to be clearly legible. The front license plate shall be mounted not more than 60 inches from the ground.
5201 (e) CVC - No covering shall be used on license plates, excluding license plate security covers.
5202 CVC Every license plate issued by this State or any jurisdiction within or without the United States shall remain attached during the period of its validity to the vehicle for which it is issued while being operated within this State. "

Not sure if you had the same type of lisence plate frame on the rear plate but I did the same thing and the screws used for the frame fit fine into the holes already there.
