Ram Air Mod for CAI

OK my version is done and on the car. I also have a small upside-down-hoodscoop-type apparatus made from some gutter material. Will test it out tonight. Also gave me a chance to clean the filter. total cost < $5.

Cool. Any pics?

i basically did the same as you - however i went real cheap (free) and just cut the hole and left it open
That's what I just did... My fender well is a bit different than Protege_Speeds's (I have a P5) and would not allow for a 3" hole to be cut out (and still be flush).

And it was FREE :) I love my dremel with cutting wheel...

Damn. Nice you've got to be getting some good air flow in there. Can you tell the difference? It seems to feel different for me but not much.b

Actually, I haven't driven it yet since it was done... I'll let you know tomorrow. Probably good for at least 1/3 of a whp or so :)

protege speed: no pics yet. have to borrow a dig cam from someone.

can't really feel much of a difference, but it is in the 100s here until dark. intake piping is quite a bit cooler to the touch. Throttle response on the highway feels a bit quicker. 1/3whp is prolly good guess. may be more effective in cool weather.

Well, all I can say is I went for long drive and afterwards I opened the hood and felt the CAI pipes were cool. The pipe from the filter to the MAF was really cold. The pipe from the MAF to the TB was cool to warm. The intake manifold was warm. Not even hot. I was able to leave my hand on there without getting burnt. The performance is much smoother and responsive. No sluggish acceleration. Hit the gas and go. I don't know if it's the same in the manual proteges but it really helps my car go.

another thing i found last night as well, behind the fog lights (well on the p5 anyway), there is a metal sheet that basically does nothing. i'm going to cut it out. that way when you take the fog light out, air will hit the air filter directly.

will take some pics for yowl

Stupid Oklahoman Fuckface Asshole Road System!!!!!!!

Ok, so that whole ram-air under-bumper scoop thing... yeah, it's gone! bottomed it out on a ginormous dip in the road. (sign was COMPLETELY hidden by a tree "DIP") it's still attached but it's bent and scraped so badly it's pretty pointless now... gonna have to replace it. ****! it lasted a whole day and a half.
At least I know what aisle to get the parts on this time... Lowes is big....

I just finished mine, wasn't that hard, just gotta cut it to make it even, it's kinda crooked right now

here is were i'm going to cut
Ram%202.jpg

it has a mesh to keep large objects out, it also has a lit that can be opened or closed whenever i want and it's a good seal, i haven't driven with it open yet(rained yesterday), hopefully i'll feel something...

mine will be similar to vivids and twighlights except ill have a little mesh in there for rocks and stuff, and infront of where the rectangular hole is cut, where the plastic is parallel to the ground I will have a strip cut out there lengthwise and have to "grates" i cut out of an aluminum house vent, the ones on the walls where your AC/heat comes out...and will have them mounted there directional to draw more air up in through thestrip i cut out.

it will be easier when I get it done and have pics, which will be monday at the latest, just have to paint the grills black and install.

I have to say that some of you may not think my setup is ram air but I may have to disagree. I get a very good amount of air to come in the grill but what really tops it off is that I have that directional duct inside that points right at the filter. This duct acts like a velocity stack that increases the air flow rate pointing in direction instead of being diffused. Don't get me wrong, I definitely believe the other styles allow for cooler air but I still think you need to have something that collects the air and increases its velocity to force the air into the filter. I know my setup definitely works (for my ES at least) because after driving on a 80 degree day, I was able to put my hand on my intake manifold without having to remove it. Like I posted above the CAI pipes were cold as well. I guess it also helps to bypass the coolant that goes throught the TB which I have done already.
