Race shifting

Just wondering how you guys shift when you wanna drag race or accelerate really fast, do you let go for gas then clutch, shift then gas + release clutch? or what? And how exactly do you "miss a gear"? This is my first stick and i wanna know the details from experience and any tips would be cool, thanx.

there are several different techniques that you can use some are more effective then others...and most are pretty bad for your clutch and tires...but oh well...

from a stop rev your engine to about 4-5k rpm...then when the light turns green release the clutch (known as dropping the clutch)...you're tires are most likely gonna squeal...from then on just keep your foot on the gas...release only slightly when shifting....but like i said this is bad for the clutch so don't be doing this all the time...

"missing a gear" is just that when you're shifting you miss the next gear by either releasing the clutch too early or trying to shift without the clutch, etc, etc...either way you'll hear a hideous grinding sound...

happy driving

Noodles.....its timing...its all in timing....and seeing as how this is your FIRST stick....and you are just learning to finer techniques of normal driving of one?

Personally I wouldn't be worried about SPEED SHIFTING right now...you need a lot more experience with it before you start using advanced techniques in driving your car.....concentrate on the basics for now and the rest will come naturally later.

IF you REALLY want to learn now.....find a driving school that teaches the finer arts of racing....lay out the bucks to take a class....one that SUPPLIES THE CARS to be used....that way the wear and tear is on THEIR cars during the learning process and not YOURS
:D

Ok, so along these lines, I've been realy practicing my speed on shifts.... Well, it got to the point that I can shift faster than my synchro's..... I'm not sure exactly what that means, but a friend of mine who has done a lot of racing (sponsored for a bit) and taught at a driving school on the west coast told me that I was shifting through my synchro's from 1st to 2nd. It makes this vert odd grinding sound, but it's not the missed shift noise.... that's almost as bad as turning over the engine after it's already on!

Hey ya, thanx, i know this is my first stick i guess i'm just a little too overly excited. (weren't we all?)

So i guess you're right i need to slow down and just learn the basics of normal driving first, and i guess the rest will come to me or i'll be ready for performance school.... or even meet up with one of you and u can show me! :D

if you're ever in AZ give us a shout...or you could go to bondurant racing school...actually...nuke makes a good point...get regular shifting down...then it will be easier later on...
