Hi everyone!

I have been debating whether I should buy my neighbor's 1980 rx7. It has been sitting in a non heated, but completly enclosed garage for 18 years. It had it's clutch go out, and when the guy's buddy was replacing the clutch, he noticed the rear main seal was leaking, and decided to replace it, even though he had no clue on how to do it. Because he didn't know what he was doing, he put the new seal in over the old one, and now the old one is in the motor. (hand) When my neighbor found out he did this, my neighbor kicked him out of the garage and said to never come back. So the car has been sitting apart for 18 years, and he said that if I want it, I can buy it for $300. Is this a good deal? (It has a little surface rust, and has 86,000 miles, and a trashed but useable interior. ) What would it take to get running? I don't have a full time job, and am a student, so I don't have much money, but I really want a first gen rx7. Would the rotary even be any good after sitting for so many years? I'm guessing it will need a carb rebuild from sitting, as well as new brake lines and maybe fuel lines. If I can't get the rotary running, I might get the car and just swap in a sbc, but I don't want to do this if I don't have to.

What do you guys think? Get it or leave it sit for who knows how long?

for all of those questions;
short answer - no with a but
long answer - yes with an if

the bottom line is that a 20-30 year old rotary is some serious maintenance. rotary engine aside, sitting that long means that you need to start over on several things. the fluids will need to be drained and refilled (best case scenario), bearings (wheel, carrier, throw-out, etc.) will need to be replaced, it will need new tires, fuel and electrical systems will need a revamp, and much other work.

to recap, will the car make a good daily driver? no, but it will make a nice project. yes, if you go into a rebuild job on the entire car, give it some tlc and maintain like crazy.

if you are a broke college student now and it is going to sit around anyways, buy it and let it sit around as your car until you have the time and money to commit to it.
