Question about HU Pre Outs

Hello,

I have an Alpine (7871) HU that has three sets of pre-outs. I am using the deck to power my front and rear speakers. I want to use the sub pre-out to power an amp and sub. So the front and rear pre-outs will not be used.

The HU has sperate volume control for the sub and that the sub is supposed to be non-fading. Is the sub independant of the bass/treble controls? So if I adjust the bass levels on the HU (front/rear speakers) down, will this affect the sub at all?

Does that make sense?

And could someone explain the adjustments on this HU for bass/treble?

Bass C.
Bass Center Frequency: 60Hz - 80Hz - 100Hz - 200Hz
Bass Bandwidth (Q-Factor): Wide1 - Wide2 - Wide3 - Wide4
Bass Level: -7 - +7

Treble C.
Treble Center Frrequency: 10kHz - 12.5kHz - 15kHz - 17.5kHz
Treble Level: -7 - +7

Obviously the level is self explanitory, but I don't really see what the other settings are doing. And how these setting effect the sub pre-out.

Thanks in advance!

Jay

Not real sure about the center freq...best i can determine it's a crossover point. As for the Q-factor, its a fine frequency adjustment that allows for specific freq curves to adjust for the properties of the enclosure. Pioneer has the same Q feature but it's not preset, it actually maps the curves out visually as you adj. Try the different settings on the Q and find the one that produces the smoothest sound...thats the one you'll want.

Easy.

The bass and treble control will effect the sub, although more accuratly it could affect the sub preout but the subs crossover should block any trebble adjustment.

Center frequency refers to the frequency that the treble or bass will attinuate up or down. Set bass center to 80 and the bass knob will center itself to increase or cut 80HZ. Same for Terble.
Q-Factor is the width of that boost. A wide Q factor will affect more of the range of sound around the center frequency as it is adjusted. A norrow Q will effect less. Wide 1 affects the least amount of the frequencies around the center, Wide 4 the most.

If you bass is set to center 80 and wide 3 you will hear the sub get louder as you raise the bass. Set it to 200 and wide 1 and there won't be as big of an effect. The sub out may or may not be crossedover in the deck, I can't remember. I believe it is and you can set it. So if you set the lowpass on the sub out then the trebble shouldn't effect the sub preout at all.
