Some of you have heard about my little side project... but I figured i'd anounce it more directly.
I have been working on compiling and fitting my car with a full manual transmission cooling system that will be compatible with heavyweight transmission fluids.
The reason behind this is that there is a lot of potential benefit by maintaining reasonable gear oil tempereatures and increasing fluid flow over the gears in side the transmision. Additionaly, for those that don't believe that manuals create much heat I can personally vouch for the fact that I've boiled fluid out of the top release valve on my car under racing conditions. There are other vendors and experienced members as well that can vouch for the potential need for our transmissions to have cooilng added.
With that said, the prototype should go on this week (just waiting for a last parts shipment) and then will be available to the public shortly thereafter. It appears at this point that the kit will run about 350 dollars and that will include the 2 gph oil pump, -8 SuperStock hose, all necessary fittings, hose ends, and fasteners. The kit will feature an intercooler like bar and fin oil cooler that is a 10 pass cooler with a thickenss of 2". The cooler will be mounted underneat the "tool tray" in the front grill and allow for additional flow to enhance the cooler performance. all of the parts will be ready to go and included in the kit with full instructions.
Additionally, we will be recording temperature changes and running various tests to ensure that this is an effective solution and to provide data for the curious as well.
Kit Contents:
Tilton 2gph Oil/Differential Cooler Pump
Earls 10 pass oil cooler
-8 SuperStock Line
4 -8 hose ends
2 adapter fittings to attach to the transmission
2 angle fittings for in and out of the pump (-8 optional)
Mounting brackets
Fastenters
Instructions
The price should be very competitive to or cheaper than anything you can assemble yourself. The pump alone typically runs just under 200 dollars.
I'll post pictures as things are developed, but you can check out our new website which also lists some of the components and so forth.
Prototype Testing Results:
Car warmed and driven for 25 minutes prior to start of test w/ cooling system off.
12 mile stretch of road used for test runs, repeated boosting and acceleration/deceleration. 9 runs per pass:
Temp prior to testing start - 117.8F
Test Run 1 w/ cooling system on: Peak Temp - 120.6F
Test Run 2 w/cooling system off: Peak Temp - 134.4F
Cool down driving w/cooling system on following run 2: 118.6 after 7 minutes (120.9 after 1 minute)
