Protege in need of an engine, a few questions:

01MP3

Hey Guys,

I have an 01 mp3 that I purchased with a bad motor. Looking for a replacement engine now. A few questions:

I was told that the 2.0L engine from the Probe or MX6 would work in the car, but that those engines run a distributor cap while the mp3 runs coilpacks. What parts would I need to swap over from the mp3 engine to the probe or mx6 engine to make it work?

Second question: If I was to purchase an engine from a 2.0L protege equipped with an automatic, what would I need to do in order to make it work with my manual equipped car. I already know that I need to swap over the intake manifold from the mp3 to a non mp3 2.0L motor. Any help or insight would be appreciated.

Thanks!

If you were gonna swap over an engine from a probe, get the KLZE V6 engine. It will fit with some mods. You can swap any protege 2.0L engine over. Swap intake manifolds as you stated and I think you would need to find a manual transmission if you wanna keep it a stick

i just replaced my engine about 3 months ago, found the engine in a local junkyard. and it doesnt matter if its off a manual or an automatic! the only difference is one bolt hole...all the others line up. i've had no problems.

I'm running an engine from a 1993 ford probe, yes

you have to change the camshafts over and plug up the distributor cap hole somehow...you can either have a block plate welded on or you can place a freezeplug in it...I went the freezeplug route

next you have to replace the oil pump on the probe engine with the one from your mp3 engine...the coiled engines have a crankshaft position sensor that mounts up to the oil pump, since the distributed engines have no crank position sensor the mounting bolts are not there and you will need to replace them...unfortunately you will need to remove the girdle that goes between the oil pan and the block so you can reseal up the bottom when you place the oil pump back on...you won't be able to properly RTV the oil pump on without doing this

next you do need to replace the crank pulley...the distributed engines do not have a trigger wheel that drives the crank position sensor

next you will need to replace the valvecover with the one from your mp3 as it has the mounting brackets for the camshaft position sensor

the rest is pretty simple...I don't recall if you need to swap over the pulley assemblies or not, I simply replaced all the external pieces to the engine with the ones from my coiled engine when I did the install...the knock sensor, the alt mounting bracket, the a/c mounting bracket, the power steering mounting bracket, the intake/exhaust manifolds, the egr tube, etc...etc...you have all the pieces on your engine already, just swap them over where necessary

as for the 5-speed swap you still have all the parts...but just to make note of a few things you will need to replace the metal gasket between the tranny and the block with the 5-speed one as the starter has a different bolt pattern...the starter also needs to be replaced with the 5-speed one...you will need the rear motor mount bracket that mounts to the transmission, but that should still be attached to your mp3...and to note: the pass side axle is the same between the 5-speed and the auto...but the half shaft is a different length and the driver side axel has a smaller spline on the auto than the manual so you will need the 5-speed drivers side axle for sure...the drivers side motor mount from the 5-speed must also be used

thats really it...since you already have all of these parts on your mp3 this really will be a simple job to do...the amount of parts that NEED to be swapped over is actually pretty small, if you are mechanically inclined you should have no problem at all with this just set aside a fair amount of time for the project

feel free to pm me with any questions...I've done the 5-speed swap several times, I've done many engine swaps on this car, and I've done the distributor to coil pack swap (thumb)

with all the work involved, just don't be a cheap ass and get the RIGHT motor for the car
parts swapping is NOT fun and costs more money!

all of the probe engines have HLAs... bad lifters and our cams don't work right in them
93.5 thru 99 engines all have CAST cranks... 626 and mx-6 included
ALL probe/mx-6 engines have a weaker block and NO place to install a knock sensor

so now, how much money you badly want to save and have a ghetto ass motor from being a cheap ass?

there's plenty of threads talking about 626 engines and stuff like that... jdmsam has a rough guide about this
