Protege 5 Trade-In Value

:
2002 Red Protege 5
So I was checking out the new cars on the Mazda lot the other day. Sales guy comes walkin up checkin to see if I'd be interested in trading in my Protege 5 for a Mazda 3. Long story short dude tells me they'd give 7,000 as trade in towards the new car.

I told him he was crazy, that KBB has it rated at 10,000 and edmunds.com has it at 9,500. I told him he'd have to give me at least 9,000 for me to consider it. So he goes back to the used car manager office, comes back, and tells me 7,000 is what it's worth.

I then promptly turned around and left, I'm not letting it go for that little so they can turn around and sell it for 12,000. My car is loaded, low mileage (38000) that looks the same as it did the day it drove off the assembly line.

Please tell me this guy was nuts. What prices have you guys been getting?

I took my car to a stealership to inquire about the same thing when the car was only 7 months old and had 3500 miles. It was still brand new and I was offered only $9000. I wanted to tell him to f*ck himself but I just got back in my car and drove off...

you know that car will be on there lot for 12k the next day....It's amazing how they would try to sell you on the cars low miles, the fact that it was only made for a short time, a well sort after little car and that the value is still great....but then again they will try to tell you it's not worth it on a trade...you did the right thing

They wanna get what they want for their cars so why shouldn't you? Good choice on walkin.

Wow!! Another reason I hate the stealership. P5's around me have been listed at the dealer for 12k to 14k with lower mileage. I just saw an '02 listed at the local Saturn dealer for 12k but it didn't have mileage listed.

Thanks for the support guys, I wasn't sure if I was losing my mind or not.

I have emailed a couple of other Mazda dealerships in my area to see if they would give me a price. I was even thinking of bringing it down to Carmax to see how much they would appraise it at.

I just can't express how much I hate buying a new car strictly for the fact of having to haggle over everything. I mean, I'm not the kind of person that wants something for nothing, I just want to get a fair price for my car.

In January I got like 9500 for mine. They listed it at 11,995 but I'm sure they didn't get that for it. They initially offered me like 8300 for it and I was like, I want $10k for it. The guy was like, book on it is what we are offering. I said that they would list it for 12,500 and I wanted 10k. I ended up getting the other $500 off from the price of the new car so if you stick to what you want then you can get a fair price for the trade.

Edit: Mine was a 2002 Vivid Yellow with Moonroof and 5spd and like 43k.

if it's a 5-speed, 8500 should be what it's worth...if it's an auto, it should be around 9K

when dealing with stelaerships and and sales man you gotta be firm with what you want and not be affraid to walk out because simply they make a profit no matter what one way or another so just stick to your guns and get what you want!

i dont exactly know...i know i dont but there is always room to play sorry if i offended you i didnt mean to....just saying that some people dont negotiate for prices and could get a better deal at times....im not saying bend over dealerships and give me what i want...ideally id like 10k trade in for the p5 but realistically i know ill get 8 IF that....which ill deal with....there is always room to play around its what i meant sorta, you just have to be firm on some things sometimes...

i have got trade values from 7400-8500 for my 03 P5 with 60K over the past couple of weeks. that is what i expected!

when i am at dealers, I really only care about the final number. I go in with a number I would like to hit, or get out with a specific pmt a month on a loan. i don't care how they work their numbers on the P & S agreement as long as i leave with the price I want.......

I saw an 02 p5 at the local auto mall with a decent amount of miles (meaning more than 30k) for around $14,000. I was shocked. What shocked me even more was the fact that it sold.

I got my 02 in 2003 with 5000 miles for $13,000. A while back a dealership offered me $10,000 trade in but it was on a new car so I know they probably were just tinkering with the numbers. Who knows.

Just the other day I wanted to trade my car in for an SUV and they took 2000.00 off the SUV(on sale) and they told me that they would only give me $8500.00 for my 03P5 Auto. I asked about repeat customer discount as well as Military Dis and they told me they already took enough off the SUV that they could not give any more.

Needless to say I walked out and took the P5 home.

Yeah, it's a 2002 auto p5 with 38,500 miles, moonroof, abs/side impact airbags, 17" wheels. I asked 9,000 for it which goes with your estimate.

Here are some recent pictures of it...

All you have to do is get them to admit that your car is going to sell real fast. For example...watch the lot on a weekly basis for Protege5s. There aren't many out there so if the dealership has one, they'll prolly put it in the front. Once you see one, keep track of how long it sits there and what the sticker price is.

Around here, they don't last 2 weeks. If you have proof of this...that's all you need. Take your proof to the dealership when you are ready to buy and make sure to insert the following into the negotiations.

a) I am ready to buy today. I have my checkbook and I'm waiting for you to give me a number.
b) I am trading in my Protege5 with Xxxx miles on it and X features.
c) I know for a fact this car sold for around (A) on your lot recently and you currently don't have any in inventory.
d) I also know it will only take you (B) to sell my car since they are a very popular used car right now due to their limited production and unique styling.
e) I am willing to negotiate this purchase if you give me (C) for my trade in. I know it sounds high, but I also know you can turn this car around and make a few grand real fast.

A= sticker price - $1000 on car you saw on the lot
B= number of days/weeks you saw said car
C= value A - about $1500. (be prepared to settle for value A-$2000.)

So if you saw a P5 listed at $13,000, go in and say you'll sell them your car for $10,000. You have to assume that the buyer of the car you saw talked them down below the sticker and you have to give them insentive to buy your car for a reasonable price. If you ask for $12,000 they'll laugh at you because it gives them no room to negotiate and still make a profit with the future buyer of your car.

IMO, $7000 is very unreasonable. That might be a decent price to trade in a Protege Sedan but certainly not a P5.
