Programming a second/third remote to Homelink- easiest way?

It's been over three years, but I remember programming my garage remote to the Homelink buttons on the rearview mirror was a pain!

I'm staying with a friend in Pittsburgh for a few weeks and it would be much easier if I could just program his remote to one of the other two buttons. I'm looking at the Owner's Manual now (pages 5-75 thru 5-78) and it specifies in BOLD print NOT to repeat the first step to program a second or third remote. My question is whether this applies no matter how long ago I programmed the first one? I don't want to go through the entire process only to erase what's already there.

Does anyone know the simplest way to do this?

There's not a shortcut. You have to follow the steps in the manual, but if your 2nd and 3rd buttons aren't already programmed, you don't need to erase the buttons to start over. I do recall, years ago on my first car with HomeLink, that I also had a horrible time programming them. But it was suggested that I put fresh batteries in the garage door remote. Once I did that, programming the HomeLink worked on the next try.
