Procharger Supercharger

Mazda, Protege, ES, w/ MSP Turbo
Well, I met with a relative this weekend who lives in AZ and works for Mesa Airlines. His other job is tunning cars. I didn't get to speak with him at length, but his recomendation is to not use a turbo and go super. In particular, he says to use procharger. I checked out their website, and of course it sounds awsome. Has anyone had any experience with superchargers? Can you identify the major differences, and what may or may not be a benefit? He says the good thing about the supercharger is that if the wastegate fails, unlike a turbo, you will not be thowing the boost in the engine. Make sence? He has been tuning cars for 15 years and has a tendency to talk over my head. Help me out. I sick of all the foocing kids racing me in dadies car on prom and winning.

Superchargers take power to make power (the engine has to work to spin them).
Turbochargers take exhaust gasses to make power. Because of this they can be more efficient. There is also "more" you can do with a turbo.
To change the boost level on a supercharger, you need to change pulleys and belts, etc.
Superchargers can make more torque, and there is no boost lag.
Turbo's can make more power up high in the rev band.
A supercharger can be more streetable once you're making lots of power.
Both make go-fast noises.

lol go-fast noises. Cool. I myself thing I would want a supercharger if I could get some money on me. I do AutoX and the instant low end power would be awesome for it. I don't street race against people hardly ever, like once every 6 months (to afraid of getting caught). But I would think a supers the way to go too, unless you're takin your car down to laguna secca or something :)

I have had ALOT of R&D experience for 3 years with the Jackson Racing charger. We built a Civic drag coupe from street form to full race trim. I'll tell you what! Superchargers are great on the street. I had a SOHC VTEC stock internals w/ some fuel, ignition goodies. A smaller pulley from my friend Tom at JRacing. I was running 12.5 psi all day long and running 13.8's (with m+h slicks). A friend of mine had the same set up in his civic but Drag Gen II turbo @ 12 psi. On the highway my car just couldn't quite hang! From stop lights it was fair.
Untill I started the full race project with a completly built motor (iron sleeves, je pistons, crower rods, head work, Accel DFI) the works. We pushed 21 psi with water injection. My best time was 11.53 on 24" m+h slicks w/ Bogart Pro 4's. The charger didn't last long..... After a few shake down runs with dfi tuning we split the charger :( . Abandoned the whole project. So the moral of my LONG story is, it all depends on what you wanna do with your car. It's really just preference and your eye on the future! I'm on turbo's side! :D

The only benefit of using a supercharger instead of a turbo is simplicity.

In particular, he says to use procharger. I checked out their website, and of course it sounds awsome. Has anyone had any experience with superchargers? Can you identify the major differences, and what may or may not be a benefit?

Supers are less efficient than turbos, but you can still make good power with them.

He says the good thing about the supercharger is that if the wastegate fails, unlike a turbo, you will not be thowing the boost in the engine. Make sence?

That's silly. I don't really ever of wastegates failing. And if they did, you'd notice an excessive amount of boost if you cared enough to look at your boost gauge.

Turbos will always out do superchargers. I say this not because I have a turbo, but because I wanted a supercharger. But either way, I say very cool and more power to you! FI is FI in my opinion. And any Protege that starts kicking butt is a good Protege in my book.

Thanks for the input, I've been reading other posts and web sites for last two days. It doesn't really matter to me weather I go with a turbo or a sc, all that matters is the BOOST. I need it, well, I guess I want it, I need to eat, sleep, and s***. From the sounds of it, an sc is simpler to install and setup properly. I understand the difference between having to upgade pullys with a sc and not with a turbo. My next question comes down to the differences between sc's. The procharger doesn't use the engin oil, so no oil lines to run, although the oil must be changed every 6,000 miles. I've seen terms like centrigufal chargers and roots SC, what's the difference? Am I forgetting any?

as super chargers go, the ProCharger is the best one out there. i believe it is self contained for oil aswell. all the 5.0 guys who can afford them have ProChargers.

Vortec and Paxton are the way to go!!!! For imports I choose JR or Vortec!

JR, that's Jackson Racing I'm assuming. They use Eaton Superchargers. Unless that's not what you're talking about.

Yes, yes... JR= Jackson Racing and the do use the Eaton Built sc, but it's Oscar Jacksons design.

kopp: The Vortec and the Paxton are centrifugal chargers, which are more like turbos and you can i/c them a lot easier. Were as the Jackson Racing is a Roots type charger. (twin screws build the pressure instantly). For i/c'ing it is harder, but water injection is the way to go on the roots type. For street use the Roots is a better way to go I think. But, the centrifugal chargers are easier to upgrade, and generate more POWER and higher boost levels. But they do have a lag to them!
