To answer the last question, I expect a car that at least operates normally.
I too have the cold morning clutch slipping problem.
Same thing, after driving it for about five minutes(sometimes less) it goes away. It is a lot less pronounced when switching from 1st to 2nd and even less after that. It is very obvious when taking off in 1st gear. It's not a matter of warming up the engine, because I do that. It doesn't have to be extremely cold either, I live in CA and it has happened to me recently(this morning actually) when it wasn't that cold out, and I garage my car.
I have tested this out a little further to isolate it to a problem with the tranny and not the engine:
If you get it into gear then slow way down without pushing the clutch in then accelerate back up and it does not do the chatter then you know it's not the engine causing the problem. Mine does does this fine and it only happens when I am using the clutch. I asked a very experienced and trusted mechanic about this(he suggested the test above) and he felt this was very strange since clutches usually slip because of heat not cold. He suggested that it at least be reported while under warranty to insure that it will be covered or to find out if there is a TSB out there about it because it is not a "normal" transmission problem.
