We're running a fairly old version of vBulletin. Newer versions do have a PM search feature.
Please PM enry about this. We've been trying to get him to upgrade to the newest version of vBulletin for some time now.
In the meantime, I would check out this: vBulletin PM Reader.
You can download all of your PMs (there is a link at the bottom of the inbox page), import the file into the PM Reader, and search using that.

We've upgraded vBulletin and you can now filter/search PM's by date, sender, and title.
