Now the powertrain warranty, does it cover the transmission, if not, what warranty does and when does it run out? My Synchros like to crunch shifting from 1st to 2nd on a regular basis while NORMALY shifting and I'm sure they are gonan self destruct soon enough.

what do you mean by crunch? my 1-2 shift experiences some tranny noise, almost like the gears rubbing against each other, but only on 1-2.

a quick grinding noise, having to sometimes force the gear in - supposedly I'm screwing up the synchronizers, and the dog collars of teh tranny are hitting and not engaging.

POWERTRAIN....is defined as what makes your car GO....so its everthing from a hardware standpoint that is your engine to the hubs your wheels/tires are bolted to. SO YES your tranny is part of your POWERTRAIN.

SO if you are still on the factory warrantee...its 3 years/50,000 miles.

whats interesting is that my labor and parts manager at the local Mazda dealer told me when I asked him that even with my turbo that the transmission would be warrantied STILL. i had not expected this but won't complain if he covers a tranny of mine that ever breaks.

Equinox,
So how's your car doing? I'm experiencing the exact same thing that you were. (Old thread, I know). I'm also wondering what effect this has in the long run.

Thanks.

well kinda hard to lead by example now as I turbo'd my car, and then while racing a corvette I broke my shift forks. I've since bought some gussetted stock shift forks from Tri-point engineering. They grind still like before, but they aren't about to give any.

However when I opened my tranny to put them in, I replaced my 5th and reverse gear, as some teeth were missing somehow.

So your synchros were in pretty good shape when you opened it? Also, what kind of shifting leads to broken forks? Would normal driving cause that?

Thanks for sharing.

Well it turned out kind of misleading. What I thought was failing synchromesh turned out to be shift forks. I estimate under normal driving circumstances, these would have gone out at 50k miles, but because I race, it happened much quicker. This was a horribly common problem with MP3s, and my friend's p5 is about to do the same thing.

I'm having the same problem right now. For the last couple of months, my 1st to 2nd shift feels odd and reverse is the same thing. 2 days ago I was driving and when I shifted to 3rd, my tranny went. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, reverse and neutral stopped working. I had to drive in 4th gear for the rest of the night and morning on the way to the dealership. It's been two days and I haven't heard from them. I'll let you guys know what happens.

Oh man, that definitely sucks ass because it means that my tranny is on the way out. Luckily, I was able to find a good transmission shop. The mechanic told me what was going on in there. He said it would require a custom rebuild in order to get rid of that problem permanently. He said that the factory specs are off, so he'd have put in some custom blocker rings...err something like that.

Anyway, how many miles do you have on your car? I'm at about 21K right now. It sucks to see my tranny go... :(

I have 35k miles on my car... you'll know when the tranny is going to go when 3rd gear grinds with the clucht fully engaged. Hopefully I'll hear from Mazda on Monday and let you know what happens. I think I'll be fighting this one with the dealership even though I have the 7 year, 70k mile waranty.

It's a 2003 by the way.
Thanks for the reply. Shifting into 3rd is not bad quite yet for me, but it is disturbing seeing many owners going through transmission problems. Mazda should do something about it, especially that quite a few cars are affected, even the 03's, which supposedly have updated transmission parts.
