Power being limited in 1st and 2nd gear, any way around this??

I understand the MS3 limits power/boost in 1st and 2nd gear in an attempt to alleviate torque steer and wheel spin. Is their a way to override this yet? I'm thinking about an MS3 as a fun daily driver and I'd probably throw some drag radials on the front for the occasional trip to the strip and I want to be able to use full power in 1st and 2nd.

How noticeable is the reduced power in 1st and 2nd gear? And is their a way to defeat the 'torque management' ? I'll deal with the torque steering and traction issues myself....

Im not sure if it does limit boost in 1st and 2nd to alleviate torque steer but i can tell you that mine has a considerable amount of torque steer no matter what gear im in whether it be 1st or 2nd and on. so i would say its not noticable to me.

Sidenote have you actually run your elantra and senata at the track? you must really love the track.
also, you must be selling the stang for a decent amount of money right?

Yes I have really taken both Hyundais to the track. The Elantra is a 5 speed so I only went once, I don't want to kill it. The Sonata has made several trips to the track. Yes, I enjoy the track and I'm lookig for something to replace the Elantra thats a lot more fun to drive. The Mustang is for sale for $15k.

I'd like to get an MS3 and get it to 104-106 MPH trap speeds. Hopefully thats not asking too much. It would bea blast to drive everyday....

According to what I've read in a few different reviews you just have to shift a little sooner in 1st and 2nd gear. Bout 6k if I remember reading right and when I tried to accelerate past that I could definitely feel a loss in power. And from some other things I've read on the forum the car does actually boost less in 1st and 2nd. Anyone with a boost gauge and a little more experience here care to comment? That's just what I've read and can't give a for sure answer because I have no boost gauge yet.

It's gona be pretty difficult. The ecu dials down the boost and controls the throttle plate on those gears (1st & 2nd). If I remember correctly cp-e posted some info about the throttle control, they said the ecu has 2 chips that control the throttle position.

The car is perfect the way it is. Why do you want to throw away your warranty, You don't even have the car yet. :)

I see Brian beat me to answering this. Haha.

Read my post again, I stated that I already know the car is down in power in 1st and 2nd but my question was two-fold:

A) How noticeable is it
B) Is their a way around it.

I'd hate to think Mazda has limited the car's power regardless of weather/traction etc.

Ok, thanks for that info. I'll see what I can find out....

I don't think its that noticeable for 2 resasons , first the car has no traction in first gear so another 35 horsepower would make the tires spin faster and second by the time you shift into third the car is going 40-55 mph so wind drag starts taking effect and the horsepower difference that you have available will probably be used up to fight drag. If the car had traction you would definately tell.

IF MAZDA HAD NOT MENTIONED ANYTHING ABOUT THE TRQ LIMITING OF THE ECU NO ONE WOULD NOTICE IT. Plain and simple.

Its not like the car is gutless in the first 3 gears, its just not as quick as it could be. Now on the flip side, there's no proof that having full potential in the first 3 gears would be beneficial. It might just blow the tires off constantly or have SERIOUS and potentially dangerous trq steer.

Don't worry yourself over it, besides there doesn't seem to be a way around it.

There's a free mod u can do to turn off ur traction control as well as ur dsc. press the dsc button for like 3 sec. (press and hold it still) then turn the ignition on while still holding on to the button. you will see your traction control off indicated by the car with squiglies image on the dash. There u go. 1st and 2nd is not limited anymore by dsc and traction control. It's free reign for ur ponies.

not noticable...not yet (xede piggy back ecu maintains boost levels at 18psi , spikes at 20 psi all gears)

wel, ive been driving around town for the last few days with this mod...and i am going to say that there is a diffrence. slight, but the pull seems to be more powerfull though. i tested a few launches, and with this simple mod, i bust thr front tires loose more than with the dsc regular. now lets see what others have to say.

Ms3 Does Reduce Boost In 1st And 2nd As Part Of The Torque Management System, Alleviating Torque Steer. However Part Of This System Takes Readings From The Steering Position Sensor. If The Computer See's The Steering Wheel Straight Ahead It Reduces Less. It Is An Extremely Advanced Stystem.

Hey all,

I just tried this free mod out and took her for a ride on the backroads around my home. All I have to say is it definitely frees up something...in the first couple gears, especially 2nd. In second the steering wheel was being ripped out of my hands...if you try this make sure your white knuckled around the steering wheel the whole time. Do a few test runs with this mod and without and you'll definitely feel one hell of a difference. This car is like a hidden treasure, there are so many cool things about it, they just need to be uncovered...thanks for the info blacksheepms3!
