Powdercoated Stock Rims

Ever since I got the car, I had hated the fact the paint on my rims was peeling. In some places it was bubbling, in other places it would chip.

I decided to pick up the Dupli-Color rim paint and clear coat. I tested it out on a rim at work and it looked amazing.

So today I started by sanding my rims. As I began on my first rim I thought I would never finish. Sanding by hand, I started to feel the pain in my fingers. I thought to myself, "how else can I do this?"...

Hopped in the car, drove to Canadian Tire and picked up some sanding discs to pop into the drill. Got home, plugged in the drill and sanded away. Took long as hell but was much easier.

Here is a pic of the before:

The After (Sanded):

The rim I painted at work (What mine should look like):

Now since I sanded them down, should I prime them before painting the rims?? Or should I just go right ahead and paint?

um... thats not powdercoating?

sand it down fine, bondo the parts that need to be fixed, and sand that down smooth, then prime and paint.

I actually wanted to do the same thing this summer but was afraid of how the Duplicolor paint would look...but I love it! THANKS FOR POSTING PICS!
Please post the Mazda mags when done, k?

Your right, thats not podwercoating at all!

Prime, paint, wet sand and paint some more, then clear and wetsand and clear some more.

I also heard bondo can be used to fill in scufs and dings after its been sanded as well.

Oh ya I'll post the pics when I have the newly painted rims mounted on the car. Say in about a week from today.

And what does everyone mean it isn't a powdercoat? Is that because I'm adding a clear coat??

Powder coating is a process where a part is placed in an oven and then electrically charged either + or - and the powdered particles are oppositely charged. And then because opposites attract, the powdered particles cling to the charged metal part. And the heat from the oven melts everything together.

............ or at least that's roughly how the process works.

What you're doing is called "rattle can painting".

LOL, OK. But the at least I have the powdercoated "look"... with a bit of gloss.

ahh - but will it have powdercoat durability? Let us know how it holds up - i hope this a good solution.

You should get them powder coated...
Powder coating is for show winners and people who want their finish to last damm near forever.
If you want your item to look good for a couple of months, come across like everybody eles's scratched, chipped, rusted, and run and sagy paint, then a can of spray paint is probably what you want.
Cleaning powder coat is super easy also, you take a window cleaner and a soft rag and wipe it down.
Basic powders can handle over 500 deg. High temp powders can handle over 1000 deg.
Powder coating is a the way to go!

Anyone know how much powder coating costs? Isn't it something like $40/wheel? Roughly? So figure between $150-$200 to powder coat your wheels. And then there's the down time that some people can't afford (no second set of wheels). Pretty soon $30 in paint, sand paper and elbow grease starts to look pretty good.

I'm in the process of painting my winter wheels. I'm not going for show quality. I just want to get rid of the bronze and polished lip. I'm painting them silver. They'll look good enough when the car is covered in road nastiness.

Well if they are all sanded down nice and your gonna do a few coats of paint i dont think primer is 100% needed.

I would Paint, light wet sand, followed by another paint and light wet sand, then do the same thins with clear coat.

Due to the sanding, there are little hairline scratches everywhere. The primer will fill those in and cover up any uneveness.

Alright. Rims turned out looking great. I will post pics of them mounted on the car tomorrow sometime in the morning. Stay tuned!
