Possible: Custom Forged Cut Gears

:
Protege MP3 #1026
Well the title isn't really accurate, but it'll get people in the thread... reason it may not be accurate is the forged part may be BS ;). But the point is I'm talking to a couple companies right now that will cut custom gears. Where this comes in handy is that I'm hoping to cut gears out of a much stronger material than our current gear box and try to get well under the 1000 a piece that the MazdaMotorsports WCC gears cost. A few places will cut single gears, so I can do small orders etc... This could be VERY good news for a lot of us on these boards that will soon start eating trannies constantly.

But one thing that would be of massive help to me at this point is if anyone has at least one gear out of the tranny (it can be chewed/stripped) that they'd be willing to part with for a couple of weeks so that I can measure and draft it.

Overall this may be a rather long project.... but I'd hope that by this summer or late spring I may have something for you guys.. possibly sooner. It's really all down to how hard making an exact match is and how much things will cost!

So.... if you are interested please subscribe... I'm aiming to try and hit about 300-450 a gear if at all possible, and to go no higher than 650 a gear. If I can't do that... I'll abandon the pursuit. But otherwise that is the hope!

Let me know your thoughts and please give me a shout if you have a gear available for me!

Later.

Steve

Ahhh, found it. I was searching for custom gearsets, not custom gears... :D

EDIT: If you need to look at some extra gears, talk to Beau. I gave him my extra transmission so that he could play with the gearsets and forks. I'm sure that the both of you working together could come up with some amazing stuff. (rockon)

Steve, I would like to suggest that you speak with Rob Moore over at nitrodriveline.com. I spoke with him a couple months ago about making some driveshafts for the car (I don't like the driveshaftshop.com axles) and he is willing to do the work. He does a lot of stuff for drag cars and I bet he would do gearsets too. He is a really nice guy to talk to. Here is a page with some of his work: http://www.turbomagazine.com/tech/0205tur_unbreak/

Hmm... I definitely would be interested in that... I'll have to give him a call..

We will start out doing just the standard gear ratios (stock) in a harder gear, and maybe later we'll do some custom gears... but that gets tricky... I have two sources that will do single gears for me at this point, and I'll talk to Rob and see what he can offer as well. One way or another! :) It's something this community doesn't have right now, and I'd like to get it for us all.

looks like a GREAT Idea...this is probably what we need for all those CRAZY BOOST motors that are being put together nowadays to be able to put down their power at the strip..MWAH 10 second proteges

I am definately interested, but cost concerns me. If you can keep it close to 300 a gear I can probably come together for something.

Keep in mind that the WRC gears are 1000 a pop... so we'd be 1/3 of that if we can do that... I'd love to do so, but it all depends on what it costs and the RandD of the matter...

Subscribing.

There is a 4.30 final drive gear set available now through a vendor; but I'm not sure what material they are made from. What kind of gears are you talking about?

I'm not looking at final drive at this point as I don't believe there are major problems with that one and stripping out under race conditions. I'm basically looking at making hardened steel or maybe even titanium (if it ends up being a good option strength/cost wise) 1,2,3,4th gears (no reason for 5th).

Have you thought about the shift forks too?

It was my understanding that those flexing is what is chewing the gears up...

Harder gears cures the symptom, but not necessarily the problem.

Good idea though and subscribing for the info...

The flexing forks will chew up the dog tooth gears, but not the actual power transfer gears, the power is what is murdering the actual tranny gears. If you complete your shift accurately and matched decently in rpm's you have nothing to worry about as far as the dog tooths or anything else. There are already improved shift forks released by Mazda... there isn't much you can do because of the design overall. I believe Beau has gusseted part of the shift fork that breaks typically... so that has already been taken care of.... tooling up a shift fork would be far too costly and simply not worth any benefit really as the problem has been addressed for the most part at this point in time.

So then it's back to the gears! I guess a few racing teams and a few others have looked into doing this before but typically found it to be very very costly. I may be in luck as I found a place that will do single gears, rather than large quantity orders, so that is where I may come out ahead comparatively. If nothing else I will provide drawings of the gears for you guys so that this can be pursued by others if I give up at some point due to cost reasons.

that should cover it!

Have a good one,

Steve

I'll be focusing in on 3rd and 4th initially. Have one good shop for doing this but they drawings for me to get a quote, and I need loose gears to do the drawings. Which Beau is hooking me up with so that will happen hopefully this week or next week. I don't know what to expect for cost yet... it could be only 100 or 200 per gear set to 600 or 700 per gear set. But I will update as soon as I have an idea.

This will be a made per order type thing because of the cost and the specialization of what we'll be able to provide and the cost it may incur, but I'm still working on it and should hopefully have some good updates in the next couple weeks.

More good news... I may be able to import a full custom dogbox transmission made for Protege's. I'll keep you guys updated at this point. Pricing will not be cheap though and thus it will be largely for the high end racing teams and so forth, but may be a consideration for some of the more crazy types on this boards. I'll definitely keep you guys updated and let you know when i get that transmission available. But I am still continuing to pursue individual gears at this point.

Later!

Steve

Nope :). The worst I'd end up charging you guys for a full 5 spd dogbox would be about 7-8K. That's shafts, forks, doggears, etc...

I want a custom dogbox! Can I get one sent to me as a, uhm... Demo? Yeah... I'll try it out, and let you know how it works. Thanks! ;)
