Poor off throttle response.

Have had my 3sHB 6s manual for about 2 weeks and just came back from Chapman Mazda for a couple of issues.

First, rebalanced wheels. Good to go.

Second, a little bigger problem(at least in my eyes). It has to do with coming off the throttle while driving. I first noticed it due to a slightly surging ride. Here's one example. Say at about 40mph rolling along in 4th gear, constant speed and level road, I let off the gas the car rolls along at the same rpm for about a full second then I feel the deceleration and the revs start to drop. Also, same scenario, I begin to lift very slowly the car just keeps rolling at the same rpm till I get a bit off of it then the car has a larger than desired slowing. This is where I am getting the surging. I make small movements lifting the gas pedal with no effect, then when the car finally slows it's too much and I have to give more gas than I wanted.

This is even more unnerving in a parking lot following other cars. If I'm following someone(say in 2nd or 3rd gear) and I let up to slow down the car doesn't respond for about a second. If I'm getting a little close to the person in front of me I can't rely on engine braking for this reason and have to get on the clutch and brake instead.

Now I've also done a few other tests in narrowing this down. If I'm sitting stopped in the car and I rev it the tach goes up and immediately comes down. If I bring up the revs and hold them at any rpm then let go the tach immediately comes down. Same if I'm driving, depress the clutch and let off the gas. Tach immediately drops.

The service department called Mazda and they said to drive another car. They pulled a 3 GT HB 6speed and it had the same delay.

So I have talked to the customer relations person at the dealer and tried to call Mazda but I'll have to wait till Jan 3rd.

Does anyone else have this issue/quirk/? I know that changing the way a Mazda behaves is not as simple as flashing an ECU or "chipping" such as the case with my motorcycles or VW's.

I have this exact issue with mine. Mine is 3S GT with build date of 5/10. I believe it has to do with the drive by wire setup. It would be nice to make it a little more responsive but that may also make the gas pedal "twitchy". Notice there is a delay in neutral when you "blip" the throttle. Now I need to let off gas and then push in clutch vs doing it all at the same time. Ive gotten used to it in my 39K miles but once I jump into either of my RX7s or my wife's civic I have to re-learn how to drive those clutch setups since the 3 is so different as far as what it wants for smooth shifts.
