Pontiac plans return of El Camino

The Pontiac G8 has been received in the US with much enthusiasm and seems to be carving its own niche market already, and its not even on sale yet. Rapper 50-Cent proudly showed off his G-stringed G8 at the SEMA show this year.

Automotive News brings some more good news for the United States car lovers. Turns out that three 'insider contacts' have let slip that GM is planning on expanding the G8 line-up with a wagon and sport ute. Both will be based on the same global RWD platform on which the G8 and Chevrolet Camaro sit.

The wagon will basicly be a remodelled Holden Sportwagon concept while the sport truck is based on the Holden VE Ute and is seen in some quarters as the return of the infamous El Camino.

There is still a catch to the plans, if the US dollar continues losing ground to the Australian dollar then exporting might become unfeasable (with US prices becoming too high), and will either delay or entirely cancel the family expansion plans.

Cool. No name for it yet, huh? The G8 Sport Truck? The return of El Camino? El Camino Dos? (scratch)

Hope is not something like the Caballero (freak), it sounds like the Isuzu Hombre to me :(

GMC has toyed with this market in the past, selling a rebadged version of the El Camino as the Caballero.

GM, choose a good name, to say the least :D

Sport truck is going to fall on its face. As many people might think it's cool, there's no compelling reason to buy such a thing. It's going to be bad at everything it does because of the design compromises.

The wagon, on the other hand...
(humpleg)

But, but... all the same things could be said of the SSR, and it was such a big hit for Chevy! (bang)

Oh, wait, except for the "compromise" thing. The SSR was built on purpose and it still sucked. Hmmmmm....

I'm scared that the wagon is going to come with lame powertrain options that are going to make this difficult for me. I'm having Magnum SRT-8 flashbacks, and, while that's a hot engine, I don't know if I'd be able to enjoy it properly with a slushbox. Will GM sell me the right G8? Time will tell. That said, I'm betting the sedan's manual should bolt right up.

Can we call it...

Canyonero!?!?

I would be so proud of the folks at GM if they actually had the enormous brass balls it would take to call it that!

They think their new Malibu commercials are self-deprecating?

i don't think this will be big enough to merit the Canyonero name, although i'm still waiting for some company to man up and go with it. and caballero made me immediately think "canyonero" as well. :) maybe "Ford F-350 Canyonero edition?"

agreed on the potential Magnum pitfalls w/ the wagon. dear GM, please please please offer a manual transmission and V8, and if you make it able to tow 5000 pounds like the Caprice and Roadmaster could, i will love you forever.

Man..you guys are awfull rough on GM....

They have actually been stepping up to the plate as of late putting out nice a decently powered vehicles.
The SS line up and the pontiac Performance line up are worth looking at.

We (Dad) own a Bonneville SSEI with the V8...that damn thing rocks!
Also have a GN.....And recently sold the GTP.
If(when ) the G8 hits the market...they will be picking up one of those in its second production year I am sure.....They've had mags and papers sitting all over their house about it.

They like their performance pontiacs.

^ I hear ya. I drove a 1990 Chevy Cavalier (5MT!) during my college times and that thing was nothing but a good car (ugly as hell, but never broke). My sis and brother owned one each as well around those times (all Cavaliers, 5MT) and no issues there.

What I'm picking is on the name. Spanish is my 1st language so "The Road" (El Camino), "Gentleman" (Caballero) or "Man" (Hombre) are not names of cars you would like to drive. Now, "Tiburon" (Shark) or "Barracuda" are something that starts sounding more decent... but I leave it there (boom06)

Wow your the first perons I've heard of having good luck with a early 90's cavalier. Mine a 93 went though tranny after tranny (4 total) and was a peice. Now my grand am (94) was a peice but it was a good car all thing considering the abuse I put that thing through.

oh back on topic sort of:
Is is me or just the green pickup or ute but doesn't it remind you of that custom p5 pickup? Or is it just the color?

If they brough that thing here with a decent engine and a mtx. I'd consider looking at one and im not a GM or Ponitac fan at all.

No, that's the first thing that I thought of as well. (second)

I don't know; you try to do too many things and you don't do any of them well. It won't be a good pickup with the small bed and it won't perform as well as a sedan (or coupe) having no weight over the rear tires. The only thing going for it will be if they badge it an el camino and let the name drive sales...

Interested in seeing the wagon and the sedan is teh sex...
