Polk MM651 speakers

Hi all, does anyone know if you can fit Polk MM651 coaxial speakers in the front doors of an mp5? I know I can fashion a mounting bracket and that the speaker will fit through the door, but crutchfield is telling me that the tweeter will bump the grills in the door. I measured everything and I think it would fit ok if I only used 1/4 material for the brackets.

Any other observations about the MM651 in general? I'd much rather go with the components, but its a bit rich for my blood.

I haven't installed a set of coaxials in my P5, but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be a problem. What I would do is take the door panel off and eyeball the grill area to see if there'd be room to put in a spacer for the speakers. I know people have installed 6.5" components in P5s, but I'm not sure how much room there'd be for a tweeter sticking out of the speaker. When you pull the door panel off, you'll notice that there is a plastic ring that's circling the inside of the grill area that extends about an inch inward. You'll have to cut that ring off; a dremel tool will make it easy.

As for the Polk speakers, I love them. I have Polk SR components, and I have a couple friends who have the lower end Polk db components, which are very good for the price. I'm confident that you'll be happy with the MM series.

Thanks man - for the post and the PM reply.

It is obvious that I'm not building a super high-end system, but I do really enjoy sound clarity and quality. I want to be able to run my stereo on a low to mid volume and still have good quality sound.

The pioneer's I got were very good on the low end (for 6x8s) and if I can get equivalent bass out of other speakers I'd be happy. What I didn't like is that I had a hard time understanding the words - even if I increased the treble. The super highs were very loud and harsh, but the stuff in between was lacking.

I am hoping that the Polks will deliver what I am after. I know the components would, but I just can't afford that. I was first looking at the polk dbs, but everyone seems to say that they don't have much bass. The 6x8 was a decent size, but Polks only offer a 5x7. do you agree that I'd be better of with the 6.5 round or do you think I should stick with the oblong? I don't mind taking the time to fashion a mounting plate.

Also, my car has the stock tweeters in the sail position. Do you think I should disconnect them with coaxials in the door or should I go ahead and leave them connected?
