Playing Spotify and other apps through USB issue - Resets to stored music

This has really be frustrating me to no end. I have verified this using an iphone 4. I like to use Spotify to listen to music. I usually pick a playlist or radio station and then use the steering wheel controls while I am driving. It works pretty well through bluetooth, but I would prefer to use USB over Bluetooth as I beleive the audio quality is better. Also it can utilize the center channel when driven through USB (Center channel opinions aside). The issue I have is that once Spotify begins to play a song, it plays for a second at most and than the iphone goes back to playing the first song that is stored on the iphone. Basically, I can't play anything other what is stored on the iphone. Sometimes I get lucky and the CX-5 lets me listen to 1 song on Spotify through USB, but as soon as the song ends, it is back to what is stored on my iPhone.

I tried an experiment. I removed all the songs on my iphone. Well, the head unit does not like that. It reported "iPod Error" upon connecting. So you have to put at least one song on the iPhone for the CX-5 head unit to not freak out. So I have 1 song on my iPhone and the CX-5 refuses to play anything other than that song when using USB.

Bluetooth actually works pretty well with Spotify and I get the track name, artist, and a couple other bits. So I will probably just stick with Bluetooth, but using USB would be preferred.

I have tried it with other apps with similar results.

Any ideas?

At least you can get Spotify to play 1 song through USB. My Samsung Galaxy S4 isn't even recognized with USB.

I have a Nexus 4. That isn't recognized. I did try it in a Ford Escape also, and it didn't recognize it either. I tried both USB modes. I guess I will just stick with BT, it works with both phones, although I only get song info using the iPhone. I guess I can live with it, just a lot of cars work pretty well with the iPhone.

CX-5, such a great car, just with a few quirks that annoy me. Not enough to make me dislike the car, just enough to make me wonder why they couldn't polish those rough edges and have a great vehicle

It is not the cx5's fault the s4 doesnt work. It's samsung and their instance on using their own protocol for usb. I see their reasonings and it can be better a few years from now when more things will support it but at the moment it kind of stinks.

Ok so I just ordered a cx5.
I did so after reading about the USB issue with a lot of android phones (and the other glitches the car has)
I also created the account just almost as a reaction to your post nizzy1115 as what you say is very misleading.

The protocol used by many devices but not limited to samsung is called MTP.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_Transfer_Protocol

My understanding, and correct me if I'm wrong, is that this protocol is free from royalties.
Unlike the apple iPod/iPhone proprietary stuff, this standard can be implemented freely.

The reason samsung and others decided to use mtp over the usual "usb disk" interface ?
Apparently because it is much better (allows better modern formatting of the disk and doesn't require the mounting/unmounting process.
That and because that usb disk format only works because your operating system supports a microsoft proprietary format called FAT which microsoft sued companies for in the past, see http://arstechnica.com/information-...omtom-over-fat-patents-in-linux-based-device/ which scared companies off and besides, the mounting issue and formatting issue are enough good reasons.

I hope the bluetooth quality is good enough and i'm going to lurk the entire forum for informations regarding hooking up something on the screen somehow.
