hmm..its easy to be on a high pedastool isnt it? when your transmission isnt broken....

as i said anyways..ill be moving on to cars who manufacturers have a reputation behind(esp the SER of yesteryear..lol), and have the oomph to match the image....

Dude, I didn't mean to come across that way. I sympathize with how you feel because I'd be pretty darn pissed if my tranny were f'd as well. If you don't like your car anymore, that's fine. However, realize that any piece of machinery is likely to break. I think that's true of even the best drivers. I mean... take a look at NASCAR... those cars have some pretty high end equipment and even they breakdown. It's just the way things are. I have a friend who owns a TransAM, takes excellent care of his car and blew out his engine. It happens. I just remember what he tells me "If you wanna play, you gotta pay". I'm aware of that when I redline mine. The more I do that, the greater the chances that something will break at some point. I'd expect that regardless of the vehicle or manufacturer.

haha eev..my bad too man
im sorry everyone..ive just..been lashing out like crazy..

Also the P5 was made to be a regular car not a race car. If you took a regular civic (not the si) and beat on it....do you really think it would hold up? i don't think. well thats me i have a MP3 and have had no prob with it and if i did i know that the dealer would take care of me.

I did own a regular Civic EX and beat the s*** out of it for 6 years and 86,000 miles. Always bouncing off 7200+ rpm's, and not once was it in the shop for anything other than regular maintenence.
As far as the dealer taking care of you, I went through 3 different dealer service centers before finding one that would actually do what they're supposed to. The dealer I bought mine from was wonderful in the sales side, but the shop was a disaster. First shop took 4 hours to replace the climate control switches, and didn't do it right. Twice. Second shop scratched the dash trying to fix what the first shop screwed up, then mis-adjusted the heater controls and didn't hook back up my emergency flasher switch. I finally found a dealer who was about 40 minutes out of my way, but actually knew how to fix things and didn't take forever making them worse. How do they accomplish this? Because Mazda is not their primary seller. They're an Oldsmobile dealer who sells Mazda's too. Not that I'm a big Olds fan or anything, but it seems that GM might actually try to hire techs with an IQ over 45.
Just letting you know to beware that feeling that everything will be alright at the dealer, especially since it seems you've not experienced it yet.

Hey look i know where you guys are coming from. It sux to have your tranny brake. And it does seem that they trannies are on the weak side. And Big_ben did say that the tech said it occured from " slamming it in to third from second" right?

Oh yeah about the world famous honda trannies??? WTF are you talking about. My mom Accord went threw 3 trannies.
Also I had a 92 Acura Ledgen which is the "higher" end of honda and those trannies broke like no tommrow. I know like 4 people that the trannies broke. Honda is world famous for their engine being able to go for 200k+ miles. They funny thing was is that i beat the s*** out of my lengden. I mean i redlined it all the time. And i raced that car on the high way all the time. always down shifting at high rmps and stuff. but never had a problem with the tranny ever. so i don't what to tell you.

Oh yeah one last thing. Down shifting can cause a tranny to break too. when you down shift you have to becareful. lets say you go from 5th gear to 4th gear. once you are in 4th and your car is reving at 4000+ rmp. Thats bad. That puts a lot of stress not only on the tranny but on the engine. do that to many times and that can make your tranny or engine to blow.

well any way. Look guys i'm not fighting against you. It does seem that the tranny in our cars are on the weak side. But not all the blame belongs on Mazda. Drive error or missuse CAN and i repeat CAN contribute to the problem.

I know this is a bit late....
Mazdas have great trannis. My dad drives a '91 323 with 115k miles on it. Tranny is fine and will be fine for another 100k miles at least. Downshifting doesn't hurt your car that much. I found out a hard way, that to stop the 323 i had to downshift to stop very fast.

Before P5 i had '01 sentra gxe. A great little speedy car. I learned how to drive stick on it and let me tell you, tranny is much better and much smoother than on the p5. Maybe cause my p5 still has 581 miles on it :-).

civics suck big time. so do accords. I just raced my friend. He had a '95 accord. p5 beat him way too easy. it wasn't even fun. i could here his car raving too much. poor thing.

just mine 2 cents.

Factors Beyond the Manufacturers Control

"Misuse of the Mazda Vehicle such as driving over curbs, overloading, racing, (my emphasis) snowplowing, etc."
:wtf:

Damn there goes my plans for this winter...

Shifting in cold conditions

It was 50F this morning and I realy had problems shifting, like if the transmission was frozen??? VERY stiff. I have a B&M installed. Anyone with same problem?

Before the tranny breaks, any signs that it will (noise, stiff, etc.)?

Now i'm worried about my pr5...i've been driving stick for well over a decade and have been doing real road racing for over 5 years

i usually exclusively buy honda products b/c of their quality and ability to handle abuse so long as you routinely maintain them (these are the miles on the origninal engine and tranny...never rebuilt all routinely maintained...300k on my crx hf [still own it], 250k on an old 85 lude, 175k on an 89 accord lxi, and 140k on a 92 lude si)...but the pr5 really caught my eye...we also needed a wagon and it fit the bill...it has less than a 1,000 miles on it...honda had nothing to offer in a wagon besides suv or a 2 door hb...i've got a 15month old kid and need something with 4 doors wagon style

i'm an average aggressive driver and often like to wind the car up for the fun of it...i also take them to road tracks and push them to their limits (mainly my crx and the 94 accord i just replaced with the pr5)...i'm worried that i can't bring the pr5 on the track now b/c it can't handle the driving...i expect brake to be redone more than the average person...i personally bleed my brakes after each race weekend so make sure there is no bubbles or water in them

after driving all these years i've gotten very used to a honda tranny...i notice on the pr5 it has an iconsistentcy in the 1-2 and 2-3 upshift...like it can get caught forcing you to grind (i don't speedshift)...i've grinded it 3 times already without doing hurriedly shifts (like under hard acceleration)...i also notice it's notchy when doing a 5-4 downshift and sometimes won't enter the gate for 4 unless i wiggle the stick in neutral...at my 1st service i'm going to mention this to the mazda dealership

i will be very upset if this car can't take the average spririted driver...i don't do burnouts or flog the car...on the track i drive within limits and don't abuse the car...my hondas have never had problems with this and i hope the same for the pr5

well..if i were u, i wouldnt drive aggressively at all..i had some things cleared today..i no longer blame the dealership/service center..
the factory rep came out yesterday and said due to the "obvious racing/hard use of the vehicle and loweing of the car" thats why that transmission kept breaking....but..
the first time it broke, my car was COMPLETELY stock minus the sound system...

no reply to that from the service reps, they said thats just what the factory rep told them, t hats why this would be the last time its covered under warranty.

bs bs bs bs bs bs bs bs bs
oh wait..theres an icon for this :
:bs:

Don't you guys see the pattern...some say they had tranny problems...other say they don't...thats normal...and for every car brand...some cars will have problems others will be mostly trouble free....Honda....Nissan...Mazda...doesn't matter.

I think you were just unlucky Protg Type 5...unless you go interviewing service depts at all the Mazda dealers to see if their is a growing trend of tranny problems...its hard to say whats really going on.

I think there are a few who have isolated problems...call Mazda...get a hold of those reps...the dealers stopped caring once you bought the car.

I understand youre pissed and you should beno need to say all p5 cant handle spirited driving. What about the member with a turbo p5 (wshade?)dont recall him having any tranny problemsand he's pushing quite a bit more hp/tq through that tranny.!

Driving Technique

Style and technique can have a lot to do with the life span of a car's trasmission ( or other parts). My first sporty car was a '65 Yenko Stinger (An SCCA D Production racer made street legal). With a 100 extra ponys available, I ripped two transaxle input shafts in half and chewed up a set of synchros before I learned how to drive the thing properly. After "the operator" got it right, there was never a single problem with the transaxle again and it wasn't babied either. My Bad. Jim

wow, this is an old thread.

get an aftermarket clutch, they're better and dont cost too much money.

then you can drive a lil more happier.

They're suckers~!

If I were you, I would say F U to them after they fixed up the car. Whatever I race it or whatever sh!T cause the car some problem, that' s their sh!t. They have the responbility to fix it. I don't know why they would like to help Mazda to save up money for fixing up cars? May be they just wanna do nothing and still get paid by mazda. I would tell them to go back to their mom and suck milk. (hump)

Mazda denied my clutch chatter 3 times. I just rolled out of warranty. **** Mazda, I will never buy another.
