Pissed at paint job...

2003.5 blazing yellow here...

This paint job is really getting under my skin! It feels almost gritty to the touch, and even after using the Meguires 3 step process, it didn't smooth out. I've now got three coats of wax on it, and it's a little better, but not much. Is this just me, or are any of you others having the same problem? Also, are there better products out there? Thanks.

BTW, I tried searching about 100 threads but couldn't seem to find an answer.

clay bar it. Had the same problem. The cars were sitting for so long, you got gunk built up on it. It's not the paint, don't blame it on that.

Get a good clay bar and take the time to do it right. Putting wax on top of rough paint isn't going to get you anywhere.

I've had a problem with my paint but it's different. It's been getting what looks like waterspots on it after I wash it, but even with using a california blade and a shammy. I think it's this protecting coat they put on it at the dealership. I'm taking it in today or tomorrow hopefully. I've heard of someone getting ripples in their paint. People say mazda paint sucks :(. Maybe you should take it to the dealer?

Don't take it to the dealer. Get out there and claybar your car. I do it every week when I wash my MSP, literally. Takes quite some time but the results are WELL worth it.

Basically, you buy that clay bar "system" which includes the clay, a bottle of quick detailer and a small "trial" bottle of their wax. After washing & completely drying your car, you spray a small area with the quick detailer and rub the clay bar over the body. You can feel an immediate difference in paint surface. After you finish that one area, spray it again with the quick detailer and wipe off with a microfiber towel.

A few notes.
1) Do NOT do this in direct sun. It's possible to do it, however, the clay may get stuck to the paint and smear or if not cleaned off properly, it could leave white-ish marks all over.
2) Also keep in mind that I've read a clay bar will leave your finish open to contaminants and sun. If you plan to clay bar your car, be sure you have enough time to properly clay & wax.
3) Keep the area you're working on wet with the Quick Detailer. This includes the clay bar itself. Once you get one and use it, you'll see what I mean.
4) Do NOT, do NOT, DO NOT, Do NoT, d0 NaWt, use the clay bar if you drop it on the ground. Think of it this way; we're a bunch of people that don't use regular towels on our cars due to the scratching. Now picture a sticky piece of clay falling on to the ground and just imagine all of the dirt/glass/rocks/bug parts/dog pee residue that's now stuck to that clay. It's not worth it.
5) No matter how much he begs, do not feed him after midnight.

So this technique provides awesome shine? Protects the paint? I've never heard of this method.

(lol) glad i didnt name my car Gizmo. :)

It's not so much a shine thing nor is it really a "protectant". It's about the most abrasive material you can use safely on a car to thoroughly remove any and all debris you have on there. It's safe for the paint but hard enough to pick up even dirt you cannot see. Do this if you buy one..

Wash and dry you car then clay bar the entire driver's side front door. Clean it with the Quick Detailer and dry it. Now rub your hand all over the door. Then slide your hand back over the driver's side rear door. The difference is night and day and you WILL want the entire car to feel like that. (Now polish & wax with a regular wax. Cleaner wax is not needed since the surface is already clean and you're basically doing the job all over again.)

So I guess it does protect the paint in a way, but it's not an "active" protectant like wax. A clay bar's supposed to be good for three or four uses, but I tend to use my bars until they get dirty enough visibly to a point where I feel I need to throw them away. Again, DO NOT USE A DROPPED BAR. My Dad dropped my first bar on the ground when he was trying to do his Sentra and it owned his paint, hardcore.

Clay bar and then the 3 step wax......make sure it is a cloudy day or inside.....you will be amazed at how the roughness goes away...as newf said these cars sat in parking lots way too long plus the 6 week boat ride

Keep in mind the 3 steps (cleaner, polish & wax) can now just be 2 (polish & wax) since the paint's already clean. Use that energy for more claybar'in!@#

Here is a trick I learned detailing cars. Take the selafane, don't know if I spelled that right, but the clear wrap around a cigarette box. Put two fingers inside of it and lightly go across the surface of the paint. It will usually feel like sandpaper. What that is could be grime, dirt, and most likely, paint overspray. Cars do not have to have been worked on to have overspray. Also if the car was delivered by train at all, it could be what is called Rail Rust. Rust that comes off the train tracks, wheels etc. I have detailed cars for quite a few years at the best detail shop in the area. I know alot so if anybody has any questions, I can give you my .02, but the clay bar will take the defects off the paint. Usually there are two different types, medium, and heavy duty, only use the heavy duty when absolutely needed. It is usually purple, but can be much harder on the paint. Hope I helped.

wow you guys are hard core! I wash mine off weekly with a Simonize product that puts a "protective coat" on. Just a cold water wash. I poliched it twice by hand this summer but never used a full on wax. This clay bar is something I had never heard of before. :)

I wash, clay, polish, and wax twice the entire car every week. Whether or not the paint will stand up to all of the wax later on is something that I just have to wait and see... I do have plans for paint before that should become an issue though, so it's all good for now. :D

does anyone already have paint chipping off the car for going on the freeways? because i got a couple of paint chips... is there anything i can do to fix it besides using touch up paint?

yeah, don't tail gate

My mp3 chipped a LOT. So, with this car, I tend to stay WAY back from the car in front.....not one chip on the car since June

hmmm, i remember reading reviews of the then new 3rd gen rx7 in the early 90s having really bad paintchipping

tisk tisk mazda!

heh and if im not mistaken, car and drivers long term rx7, was yellow too! heh and chipped all around the wheel wells and such

Thanks for the advice, all! I will definitely look into the Zaino Brother's this payday. I'll let you know how it works. Thanks again!

You should also look into www.zymol.com. The wax is a little pricey but man does it leave a shine like no other. I just started using it after I got my car any it is the best stuff I have ever used.. Way better than Meguires.. And if you dont have micro fiber towels get some...
