2014 CX-5 GT w/ Tech
Hard working sales do get the extra benefits! If it wasn't Mazda's dealers were opened on Labour day on Monday, and Honda was closed, good chance I didn't make the purchase so quick. Got it on Monday, ordered Meteor Grey, GT w/ Tech. Another good thing was, we were talking to sales manager directly, didn't even have to negotiate, he offered us $35,000 flat + the rest (tax n stuff), on 48 months lease. I don't know if it was best deal, but almost got free Tech Package, and they did open on Labor day, so we got it! The manager told us the car should be here next week or so, but suddenly I got call from him today saying it'll be ready tomorrow!

So this is my first brand new car, very excited! That's why i'm here asking you guys, masters, what to look for in a new car. What's the acceptable mileage on the car already. 10KM? And how to look for certain defects or any known issues?

Anything helps, and greatly appreciated!

Cheers guys!

Congratulations on your purchase!

Your new car should be free of defects. However, cars are mass produced and travel far so things happen. It's your dealer's job and your job to identify these before you accept the car and work out any adjustments or corrections that need to be made. Good dealers will spot and notify you of issues before you see them and put them on a "Will Do" list of things they'll fix or correct. (They should sign and date it -- it's a contract now.)

Example: My CX-5 was transferred from another dealer who didn't tell me that the windshield had a small crack in it. My dealer pointed it out to me and told me they'd replace it. They put it in writing and did so at my work site (60 miles away from them). Now, I can't tell the difference. Great job.

Your car is under warranty and Mazda will fix things that weren't manufactured, assembled or otherwise failed prematurely. However, after you've been driving the car for a bit, the effort needed to convince a dealer that a defect is their problem instead of your fault increases. So this initial inspection is a chance for you to put all the responsibility on them because you haven't touched it yet.

In the US, many states have laws that change the status of the vehicle when you drive it off the lot. So inspect it on the dealer's lot, drive it around their lot, try lights, brakes, etc before you leave the premises. No idea what laws protect you guys in Canada, but more than likely they're similar.

Walk around the car slowly and look for anything that looks obviously wrong. Have them walk you through the proper operation of all controls and try things out: Do the seats adjust properly? Do the rear seats collapse with the trunk handles properly? Wipers work? Radio works, etc.

I think this acceptance process took me about an hour on a Friday night. Just enough inspection to avoid obvious problems that you want to catch early.

Then, take your car somewhere scenic, take a picture and post it. Cheers!

Thanks maxwax! I was also down in Bellingham, WA today and got some claybar. I remember when the condition of my parent's 2012 X3, it was bad. Lets hope Mazda does a better job.

Great advice maxwax!!!

Enjoy ya new CX-5!!!
