Perfect shifting

I've noticed that the MS3 doesn't feel super fast until about mid RPM 2nd gear.

Whats the optimal rpms to shift at in 1st and 2nd for speed?

take them for what they are... just numbers.

Gear Ratio MPH/1000RPM MPH @ redline MPH @ 5500RPM
I 3.54 5.3 36 mph 29 mph
II 2.24 8.4 56 mph 46 mph
III 1.54 12.2 82 mph 67 mph
IV 1.17 16.0 107 mph 88 mph
V 1.09 20.4 136 mph 112 mph
VI 0.85 25.9 174 mph (limited, 155mph) 142 mph

Gear Ratio KMH/1000RPM KMH @ redline KMH @ 5500RPM
I 3.54 8.5 57 kmh 46 kmh
II 2.24 13.5 90 kmh 74 kmh
III 1.54 19.6 131 kmh 108 kmh
IV 1.17 25.7 172 kmh 141 kmh
V 1.09 32.8 219 kmh 180 kmh
VI 0.85 41.7 280 kmh (limited, 250 kmh) 229 kmh

if you shift about at those speeds you should be getting the best times THEORICALLY

Goodluck!

that look bad... copy/paste in any text editor to get it clear caus the dam forum wont let me do it right

isnt the first gear like computer limited so less power goes to the wheels so you dont spin to much. with it being front wheel drive and all

In C&D when they did the road test on the ms3 they contacted mazda engineers about this for some reason. This is what Mazda engineers had to say.

Pop the clutch at 2900 rpm, upshift at 6000 - redline is 6700 - and flat-shift through second and third (which means dont lift at all - the mechanical equivalent of dropping a steinway on the clutch and half-shafts and violating our test procedure).

Dont worry."the engineers said,it wont break,"

Enjoy...... :)

Yeah it helps a bit but you can still spin 1st and 2nd easily. This car takes a little getting used to for sure. The cool thing is there's no need for high rpm clutch dumps. When I launch hard I try to keep the rpms between 4 and 6k from 2nd gear on up.

no? well it sure sounded like it did! I tried a clutch drop at like 2500 rpm today and it made the scariest BANG sound I've ever heard in 15 years of beating on cars. I thought I snapped a motor mount or the engine moved enough that it smacked against the hood. It was REALLY f'ing loud.

When the traction control kicks in it can get violent. DSC should be off. If it was, then you need to check that nothing's loose in the front.

It did that to me too.I was like WTF was that.

There is threads on that sound already.

DSC was off

I did check around under the hood and nothing looked/felt loose

Won't be able to get under the car until later
